operation: upside down/ reverse case (kind of)

right, been thinking....again!
caught between two options here.
one, go for the original bottom to top airflow, although looking at the layout the two bottom fans will be under where the drives would be so not the most direct flow.
two, go for the smooth front (with or without mesh, and probably the traditional front to back airflow) with power button and slot drive on top.
or could try and mix them both together which would turn into a real mess PLUS it just wont be right trying to put airflow into a smooth looking case?
the frame is ready for priming and the top is off awaiting its fate along with the front. oh and then there is the option of colour! was gonna be brave and go for a deep red (!) but will probably go for ye olde black, nice and shiny with a chrome power button and maybe, if i can figure it out, have a drive like the wii that will have a blue light in the slot?
oh god, time for my medication again.... laters all!

I think this would look good. Though as you are turning the case upside down, you could use the expansion slots at the back for airflow by somehow putting a 92mm or even a 120mm fan in there if there is space.

hmmm, ok then. u will put the bottom to top airflow project to the back of my mind, unless someone else wants to try it? again, Raikiri's pictures has helped a lot, especially the sloping front. i was going to join and smooth the top and front together but it would be hard graft and look a bit alienware!?!
got a nice idea for the front vents which will take some effort but i think it should look good. if i was good with photo shop and that then i would post a picture... maybe i will go for the ancient pen to paper method first!!
oh yeah and looking at the back, a 120mm is a no no but 92mm should go.

Well, with regards to airflow you seem to have a lot of options, either top or bottom or both at the back and if the front is being custom made then it's up to you ;)

And as raikiri said, brushed aluminium would look ****ing good. It's a shame that the only way (I know of) to get black brushed alumiunium is to anodise it. As it seems simple enough to do the sanding+laquer method if you want to keep it unpainted.

firts off, cheers $loth for your input and ideas, ive been reading your thread with interest.
okay, dont laugh too hard but this is my effort to show whats in my head.
still undecided about the lights, blue seems a bit predictable, might go for pure white...... seems a bit pointless going to the effort of putting the activity lights in the top too, thought it might break it up nicely though

just noticed that the side is facing the wrong way and i have not thought of window options but , hey ho!

Hey bluntside,
Your design looks great mate, would love to see it once you start cutting it.
Its funny you should mention the activity lights on top cos I have decided to go for a button on top but cannae decide about the leds.
As for colours blue lights still look class, not original but classic all the same.
Good work
Mark

i must admit, i have not done much on the case this weekend (booo, hissss). i have been a little more productive today though (hurrah). primed the inside bits and gave the back a good seeing to!
will upload pictures when i get home, they are not very exciting but i know how you lot love pictures!

the one of the back looks loads better in real life, i dont want a mirror look, just a shiny/clean look.
oh yeah, does anyone know where to get mdf that is not 8ft x 4ft??!!

i think if the cuts are any thicker it would not look right, not sure if i should have 6 instead of 5 either but its only pencil for now!

"sigh"
waste of a day today (well the first half). im doing most of the work at my parents house and assumed that my dad, owning two jigsaws, would have a good selection of blades. errr, no. not one! so all i could do is make some pilot holes and do some more priming.
hopefully tomorrow, i can get some blades and make some real progress!

just needs a bit of filing/sanding, although its straight at the front, the back is not so its gonna be a bit tiresome.
need to start thinking a bout the colour though, frame is ready for paint!
