Sorry to start another thread on these, but I dont think this has been answered anywhere else!

I (along with most of the UK it seems!) have been trawling the darkest corners of the net for retailers with confirmed stocks of Opterons in order to try and give a few more months of life to my S939 motherboard.

I'm told that the 165 is the best value one, but all I can find for sale (at a premium!) is the 185. How does this compare please, I've been warned that 170s are not reliable overclockers but what about the 185. Presumably its already equivalent spec to an overclocked 165...??

Any help appreciated - I'm trying to postpone the move to C2D Conroe until later this year if possible!

Thanks,

Can't say the site's name here but the place i ordered one from is getting 65 more in stock (the Opty 165) this Friday according to their website.

Good luck

Purely hypothetically and in the interests of academic research only of course, if I happened to be using a certain search engine what search criteria would you use to find out a lot of information about Opteron 165s....?

How are these latest 165's clocking? I currently have a 146 that only does about 2.7 stable so thinking of getting one of these badboys

In stock

Shame on OCUK for not stocking these :D

Having now sourced an Opty 165, back to my original question - how does a 165 compare to a 185 when it comes to performance etc. I know it should be a good overclocker, but I am a bit worried that at stock it seems very slow (1.8 GHz) compared to my existing AMD 64 3500.

Cheers,

Aye, but what you must remember, is that's 1.8ghz per core(and theres 2 of the beggers! :D), with a nice 1mb cache (per core) and always the headroom to overclock (good stepping we're talking like 2.6ghz++ here), there very "bulky" cpus - Typical amd style :) 185 just isn't worth it imo because chances are you can get a 165 to 185 speeds and save yourself a whole loada cash in the process :)

Surely if OCUk don't sell dual core Opterons they can't be a competitor ? Tempted to get a second X2 4600 but if there is something better out there, would definitely be interested in a 185.

gonna need a good mobo for a 165 to get real high htt due to low multiplier.

opteron 170 or 175 may be a better option for low end mobos
