got promoted to Gold League yesterday, rank 8 at the moment! wooo!

hows everybody finding the beta so far? any gripes?
 
I've never played Starcraft but I find watching SC2 commentaries on youtube, and watching livestreams extremely fun. It's all I've been doing all week. I can't wait to play it actually. I've always liked RTS games, but always been terrible at them too. Even though I'll get my ass kicked when I do get round to playing it online, it looks extremely fun to play.
 
i dont pre-order games to be fair, s im normally at work on the day of release anyway, i just go to town and pick a copy up. im not fussy about paying an extra few quid. and i never realyl trust people to deliver on time.

i have heard about amazon doing this quite a bit. lame imo. perfect example of why i dont pre-order.

What race? And yes, control groups and hotkeys are essential. Especially when microing units.
 
Not really, I mean it helps but I find it is more down to tactics and knowing how to get the best out of certain units and what units to mix etc.

I disagree. Being able to scout, setup new bases, patrol areas, expand main base and build units at the same time is what makes a very good player.

I can only do a couple of things at once so i'm not that good. I watched a few replays of Starcraft 1 where I was playing and got easily killed. The opposition was doing 4 or 5 things at once whilst I was doing a couple

When I was playing I thought he was just attacking me, whilst sending a group of air units around the top part of the map. I didnt see he was also pumping out units at a lower base, near mine. I sent units to attack and defend from the air attack but then got my base wiped out my a huge group of marines that were being made from 4 barracks near me

To be a good player you need to have a great balance of Micro/Macro management.
Speed isn't wrong, but hes only half right :) hehe

Hotkeying your units, and knowing all the shortcut keys to create your units/structures REALLY helps with both. you'll find that a player that uses hotkeys and shortcut keys will be far superior to players that don't (in 99% of cases)

for me, im a Zerg player, i normally use these hotkeys
1-3 = Unit Groups - Closer to the "A" key for attack moves.
4-7 = Hatcheries - Closer to the S key to hotkey the Lava after selecting the hatch
8 = Scouts/patrol/extra hatch - ... just because!
9-0 = Drones in my mineral line at main/exp - Allows me to move peons quickly to avoid drops on my mineral line.

my advice is to always keep an eye on the map, always keep scouts around to find out what their doing. the more vision you have the more power :)
small, cheap unit at every mineral field will prevent any ninja expansions.

Don't lose all hope by the way. :)

Even after the initial invites and the additional waves the number of players only seems to hover around 5-6.5k during EU evenings (that number includes the US and Asian servers also) and Blizzard have stated they wanted the load to be above 10k all of the time.

...and yes, don't lose hope, my friend got a key in his email yesterday! :)
don't even know if he's goign to play it though which is annoying!

How on Earth do you micro effectively with so few unit groups?

You should have one hotkey for your hatcheries in SC2, around 5-6 for units for effective micro, and the rest on scouts, upgrade buildings etc.

Just overwrite and rewrite as and when needed, i rarely use more than 4, even late game, micro has never ever been an issue for me. pretty good at it. i just slack a little with my macro at times ^^
normally separate casters/ability units from those hotkeys as and when needed.

for the rest i use my mouse.

Although im still yet to experiment fully with the new key abilities that wernt in sc:bw.. or at least that i didn't know about.
