**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Hi guys my username is AnimalMother in battlenet. I would have added my name to the list here but dont know how to or know where my battlenet number is either!? Pretty much a noob but really enjoying it! Hope to see you guys on SC2 soon.
 

Starcraft2 doesn't have any true A vs B counters unless you count air vs something that can't target them, everything is somewhere on the scale inbetween soft/hard and can change during play depending on unit count / upgrades present.

You then accuse Starcraft 2 of lacking the micro finesse and start harping on about flanking in CoH? micro'ing a flank in SC2 to ensure you open up with the most amount of units as possible doesn't count? then the terrain doesn't matter thing? yikes...

You can't watch a match or two (especially from way early in the beta) with zero knowledge of what you're looking at and extrapolate all this. Watch casted 1v1s of the better players; learn a bit about macro / micro / build orders in play.
 
i agree with some of the sntiment here. yes SC2 = speed rts.

i have played other great RTS such as Close COmbat (i have 3 through 5 and COI) which is a more realistic COh basically - but the balance COH brings in terms of tiering strategy A =/ B {circumstance Y} = CHAOS, speed and tactics/micro/macro etc just seems a more complete package.

i guess once you have used cover, and flanking tactics etc it must be wieird to just headlong charge ito things where the terrain really does not matter, all that matters is your unit mix and relative position, as opposed to getting the unit mix, position and tactics employed like COH forces you to do...

sporry for derailing the thread i know a lot of ppl like SC. i hope some korean piospammers from COH can now finally go and self actualise on SC2 instead.

So I agree with you SC2 is darn fast-- but just because a game is closer to the top of the list isn't an argument to call it bad by any means. Also COH is actually only just below SC2 on 'hardcore' scale. It's actually, believe it or not, quite an arcadey game considering whats out there in RTS land ..

It really isnt...

When I usually play RTS games, multiplayer is always the main part of the game for me, most RTS games have poor singleplayer campaigns which I don't usually even finish.

I'm just blown away by the quality of SC2's campaign though. I haven't even touched multiplayer and i've put about 5 hours into the campaign (it arrived today) and it's the most fun i've had in a game in a long, long time. I was skeptical about the choice of pricing the game at £35, but now I see why, the game just oozes so much quality I think it's totally fair that they charge an extra £10, whether it was Activision's decision or not.
 
The number relates to your unit count (aka supply count) which is in your top right hand corner

So to expand on the shorthand explination
When you have 13 supply build a spawningPool
When you have 13 supply build Gas building (extractor as Zerg) (sub note as soon as the gas building completes move 3 drones to it in order to start mining gas)
When you have 15 supply build an Overlord
When you have 16 supply keep building Drones until
your spawning pool has completed then start building Zerglings (sub note as soon as your spawning pool completes build a Queen)
when you have collected 100 gas (top right next to minerals) go to the spawning pool and research Zergling Speed (metabolic boost I think) and take Drones off of gas mining and move them over to minerals.

I'm not saying that build is good or bad, only what the build means... This looks to me to be a Zerg vs Zerg build (IMO)

Builds are usually only good for the early games and rushing. Mid/late builds rarely exist due to the fact that they depend entirely on what your scouts show.

On another note, have any of you had any players saying "No rush?" at the start of game. Was reading this on other forums and thought it was quite amusing.
 
Cheers guys I understand it all now :). Done a couple of games online with a set BO in mind for early game and I won both so they do give you a slight edge

Husky on Youtube has some good tutorials in addition to build orders e.g. key binding tips. Can save a lot of time and very important to survive/win the initial rush. Will certainly make a difference versus your standard player.

won all 5 of my placements! :) yey! got put in Platinum.

Not bad conssidering my Terran play is still shocking.
 
Im finding this quite hard to get used to.
Obviously my build order is all screwed and I havent learnt much about the units yet but that will come in time. But I am finding it hard to pull myself away from the Company of Heroes/Dawn of War 2 cover usage :/

I played those games quite abit, and find it odd to not have to consider cover or flanking, but then I guess it is Starcraft :)

Also Im not finding the graphics are that great? I mean sure its an RTS, and the cutscenes are fantastic, but I would have expected the game to look abit nicer with everything dialled upto 11.
