**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Man, I just can't seem to break through to Platinum 1v1, as I've been in high-Gold for ages. Need to step my game up, yo. :o

I'm sure it isn't. But when someone turns up at my base with 5x my troops in a few minutes I'm not going to be able to counter that am I.

What race do you play? At what stage of the game does this happen? (how many minutes in)

Can you upload a replay for us to take a look at?

At a blind guess, i'd say its a scouting issue. If they have 5x more units than you then you've not scouted them and reacted to their unit count. lets see the replay first though, i think we'll be able to help sort it out :)

Just means you have to learn to macro better. :)

doitttttt

Definitely watch that video, aside from the odd chap presenting it, it's excellent.

Showed me this game isn't all about speed, and it's not, no requirement for frantic key thrashing it's more about getting used to patterns in your play.

I found I could build pretty quick and easily get a strong economy but I simply wasn't making best use of it, following a few simple checks I'm slowly working towards the efficiency balance of using just enough resources not to fully deplete my stocks.

Seriously, watch that video, and then practise your first 10-15 minutes against the AI using what that video teaches you. I practically doubled my unit and build output WITHOUT doubling my work force or my own work rate. :)

It's enabled me to create a pretty potent Raven harass - at around 6-7 minutes I drop 6-8 turrets at the enemy supply line. :D

Blasphemy!! Day9 is a god in the Starcraft community. :D

Glad the video helped though. It's ridiculous how good Day9 is at explaining things like this.

If you don't know him, he was one of the top Broodwar players. He won a WCG and got to the final of like 5 of them. He was definitely up there with the best non-korean players of all time. Unfortunately he hasn't been playing SC2 as much as he did BW so he's not at the very top but he's still damn good. He focuses more on commentary and analysis, both of which he is the best at in the Starcraft community with maybe the except of Gretorp. But seriously, if you want to get into diamond, watch Day9s dailies. Watch like 10 of them and you'll be in diamond.

It's practically impossible for then to rock up at your base with 5x your unit count.

Even if they are Terran =]

No, usually there is some pretty major mistakes going on if that happens.

Generally (I forget what race you play, but let's assume protoss), the most common mistake I see is early double gas. It might not seem like much, but the impact of putting 3 extra probes on gas early on (like at less than 30 supply) is huge.

If you're doing a particularly gas intensive build (and are necessarily sacrificing early tier 1 units) then fine.

But you can't support 4 gateways with double gas until you're well over 50 supply. The other mistake I see is people will build 4 gateways AND THEN build units. No.

You build a gateway, a cyber core, research warpgates and build zealot, stalker, sentry, zealot, stalker while chrono boosting warpgates. When you stop being able to spend all your money on units, you start adding your 2nd, 3rd and 4th gateways.

It's amazing how just focusing on getting those 4 gates up as efficiently as possible will change how much stuff you get and how quickly.

When I play 2v2s, sometimes with gold and below players, their basic openings are so horribly broken. It's not so much about builds though, but rather just spending their money, and especially spending it efficiently.

I play T/P. I'm sure it is my build order. As P I do tend to 4gate, and don't usually double gas until a bit later, probably not 50 supply but fairly close to it.

Actually beat off a Terran proxy rush last night in epic style, but the consistency of doing it just annoys me.

I'm getting sorely annoyed now. Everything seems to be about rushing, and despite following build orders, watching replays I just struggle.

I find this a lot. Someone/both goes all in, one player comes out in front and wins the game.

It's worth it to have a good match where the opponent is happy to play a macro game though. Was shocked to play against a 2-basing Terran player last week (on steppes of war! :p). Had a really good game :)

Yea i still suffer from this. I build my cyber core and realise i have 75 minerals ready to build something with. Just so tempting to throw down that assimilator rather than wait for 150 for the next gateway :p.

The result is a skew too far towards sentries in my army, and I dont have as much money as i could put towards, say, an expansion. While i can throw down innumerable forcefields, I just dont have the DPS in my army to do any real damage, especially to a terran's marine marauder death ball.

Struggling in ZvT atm, need to rack up some games. Neursy/Milky, fancy some games late tonight if your around?

Ah, I guessed as much.

Playing SC2 brings so many memories back of the original, I can't believe it was about 10 years ago that I was addicted to that! :)

Have to agree with some of the other posts about Day9. He is such a legend :) Absolutely love the dailys he does, they definitely got me into diamond. I'd happily pay to watch them tbh.
