Hi Overclockers,

I'm sure this is posted here all the time but i want clarification before i buy an SSD for my rig.

Can i migrate my OS (Windows 10 Pro) from my HDD to an SSD without deleting/reinstalling files? Such as using a program like EaseUS.

I would further like to know which is the best thing to do when it comes to reinstalling my OS on an SSD, in terms of the safest way to do it to avoid file loss. I would like to know all your opinions and possibly a guide on how to do it as I've never done it before and i don't want to mess it all up.

I'm planning on getting an 240gb Samsung SSD, and plan to use it for my OS and a few games.

My current rig

AMD FX 8300 8 Core (overclocked to 4.1ghz)
ASUS 970 Gaming Aura motherboard
Radeon RX480 8gb Gpu
650w Corsair Psu
Corsair Seidon CL Watercooler
16GB HyperX Ram
And 5 Fans (not that it matters)

Also if you see any minor issues with my setup please let me know, im worried about my 4.1ghz Overclock might be to much (ive had no problems and no core failures as of yet), and also that my Psu might not be enough for the rig?

Thank you in advance guys, look forward to hearing your replies.

I'd usually use Macrium Reflect (the free version) for the copying, but there are quite a few tools with similar capabilities.

If the contents of the HDD will fit onto the SSD then it's a simple job. Clone the HDD to the SSD and let the tool to choice adjust the partition sizes as appropriate. Once it's done connect the SSD in place of the HDD.

If you're installing Windows onto a clean drive you want to have only that drive connected. Once the install is complete any additional drives can be reconnected.

If you're doing anything like this and there's any data you care about you should have backups in place, and they should be tested. If there's any data you care about you should have backups already.

What do you have your sata port set too in the BIOS? normally have the options of AHCI, IDE or raid.

If your doing a clean install (best option) make sure they are set to ahci first and no other HDD or SSDs are connected to the PC

If your cloning there will be a reg tweak needed to be done before cloning before to change it to ACHI otherwise it will not boot.

I don't think you need to mess around with reg tweaks on win 10 when switching between IDE and ahci modes.

It just auto detects and installs the relevant drivers on boot.
