OS X Mavericks - GM seed now available (active Mac developer accounts only)

So those that are using it, Clean install? Or just upgrade over current OS?

Did both:
  • upgrade on the MBA over DP8
  • clean on the iMac (previously Mountain Lion)

Used both over the weekend quite a bit and to be honest, they're both pretty much the same. Did try an upgrade on the iMac at first, but there was an oddity on Displays preferences where the depitction of the display was upside down!... thought I'd do a clean later on instead, no Aussie monitor this time.

I've got a Mac Pro in for upgrade that I'll need to do this week, but I'm not anticipating any shenanigans with that one.

As per the later issues of the DP, all my core apps just work and I've not had to upgrade anything to newer (read "paid") versions to get them working.

I found this method on MacRumors which people there, especially the Devs tend to prefer.

Much shorter and easier it seems.

This is better than osxdaily's method (which should only be used for DP1 anyway, not DP4 or the GM):

To make a bootable USB of the GM, use this method:

Your 8 GB USB drive should be called Untitled and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The installer should be called Install OS X Mavericks.app and should be in your Applications folder.

Run this in terminal and wait about 20 minutes:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction

You should see something like this:

Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 100%...
Copying installer files to disk...
Copy complete.
Making disk bootable...
Copying boot files...
Copy complete.
Done.

You can then boot up from the USB by holding down the option key, then install the GM from the USB.

I'll probably finally buy myself an SSD for my system, and then just install form USB :)

any guess to when maverick is officially going live?

In a week I think. Apple still have the October 15th event coming up, I think it'll launch then.

I'll be ordering a 250GB SSD this week so it arrives around that time, along with a 16GB memory stick for the OS, and 2.5-3.5-5.5inch adaptor for the SSD. :P

I was shocked as well but it updated this morning...

You can't get GM unless.... the plan is that developers do get Mavericks for free ...

That's pretty much the same as every recent release though, isn't it?

Saying that, you can still pay for it again after the fact, even though you've already paid your Mac dev fees for the year!...

Never understood that to be honest, paid up Mac dev that gets the DPs and the actual GM, yet some of them still insist on supping the Koolaid and paying again! Plenty of talk of such things over at Macrumors and whilst I know some Apple fans can be a little fanatical, paying again for something you're already legally entitled to use strikes me as daft.

Still, GM is pretty sweet and I'm all good with it.

Yeah DP8, but I was under the impression that the GM would not be available from the software update in the Mac App Store.

I reckon they'll have pushed it, to counter any issues with expiring DPs and the like. That's all I can think really.

Been on mavericks GM for a day now, and it's absolutely great!

Especially the support for OpenGL 4.1, AMD, and NVIDIA just need to get their OS X drivers sorted now. Especially AMD.

Had a few issues with Camtwist for broadcasting, it kept freezing after a while, although no issues with FCP X so far. Still need to run my other software and see how it all works.

I expect quite a few developers to push up updates for their Apps over the next few weeks.

Mavericks also seems to be a smaller install footprint than ML. I've only barely used 38GB, for the OS, many apps, updates, downloads, and more.
It seems to have a smaller footprint, and is just better overall.

Although my Opera Developer 18 app's GPU Process keeps being reported as Not responding in Activity Monitor.

That's another thing, I don't like the new Activity monitor much, it's simply that I'm use to the old one, and new graph and stats at the bottom don't seem as nice.

it also has an Energy tab now though, so if you're on a macbook you can keep track of which apps and processes are using the most power.

Currently Final Cut Pro X is dog slow for sharing/exporting work. Activity monitor keeps reporting the ProTranscoder Tool as not responding as well. Not good.

Taking me 2 hours to export a 20 minute file from ProRess 422 to .Mov, never mind the hours of transcoding and rendering.
