OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) Roars Into Existence...

I'm beginning to see what Windows users mean when they laugh at Mac users having to pay for Service Packs...

You do know that as well as the show stopper features they will be doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Just look at what happened with the transition from Leopard to Snow Leopard for example.

However I'm sure it's more "cool" to just go lol service pack.

I agree as long as the option exists to turn it off (and Apple themselves have said it will be) then it will be great news for less computer savy users.

I'm sure we will get the fair share of "walled garden" posts though...

Yeah as long as they keep the option to turn it off and continue to allow you to download apps from outside the App Store, people shouldn't be too angry about it.

:p

Messages need a lot of work, on both the Mac and iPhone.

If I send an iMessage from my Mac it goes to both my mates mac and iPhone.

But if he sends me an iMessage to my number, it only goes to my phone. And each method brings the iMessage up in a different conversation on the phone.

It really, really needs work!

OS X is starting to have an iOS style release schedule i.e. small updates but lots of them. Whereas Windows still has the classic release date schedule i.e. long gaps between releases but loads of updates in each release. Considering that OS X is approximately a quarter the price of Windows the overall effect is quite similar, you could even say Apple's way is better because your generally getting new features quicker. In fact there's been rumours of Microsoft going a similar route to help them better compete with iOS and Android in the tablet space.

Yeah that's a fair point.

I'm just a little perturbed when I see "Game Center" as a headlining feature of the new OS.

Yeah I just tried to use it again and it's really really buggy for me at the moment...

I don't think that's a bug - it's because you have the caller ID on your phone set to your mobile number. If you set it to your email address it'll duplicate the conversation to your Mac too.

If I send a message via OS X it shows up as my email address. It doesn't sync to my phone and replies go to OS X. I'm using my Apple ID.

I wonder how long it will be before the two merge into one. I was right about the name though. I've always said there will be a Mountain Lion equivalent of Snow Leopard. :D

While the list of changes will grow over time, I will go by what Apple have given us so far.

I don't think that this is a bad update as such, but it is definitely incremental. Lion is still very much a new operating system, that is quite a change over previous versions.

This is simply a merge of iOS; a good move in my opinion, if we have iCloud, why not have full compatibility across all Apple's products?

That said, things won't settle well if Apple are going to leave it at that (which I can't see them doing).

messages is great already, seemless chatting with the gf/friends means i can leave my phone in my bag!

Post the link to where it can buy a new and official copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for £25 please!

On a serious note, iMessage on mac is great! I'm using it now :D

How are you using iMessage? Mine simply isn't working. Firstly, the app was empty (I expected iMessages to be fetched from the cloud?), and secondly, on the menu bar icon it says my status is "offline", but it does nothing when I try to turn online =/

All my messages come from my email, how can they appear as from my number? Had the same issue with iPad so turned it off...

They can't, as your Mac/iPad don't have a phone number, only your phone does. Just switch your phone to use you iCloud email address as well, if you want all conversations to carry from one device to another.

That would mean every one of my contacts having to add my email to my contact card then?

TBH, I don't even like iMessage, much prefer Whatsapp.

When you take in to account how much the os is each time roughly £21 for lion this time round and how long they last it still wouldnt come to 1/4 of what a windows version is on release

This isn't true.

It took me and a couple of mates of FaceTime a good couple of hours to figure everything out, but we have finally got it working.

firstly, you don't have to change your caller ID to an email address, it will work regardless of whether you have it as that or your phone.

What is important, is that if you want it to show up on your Mac, you need to make sure the first message sent, is sent to your friends apple ID email. From there, no matter how they reply, whether from a phone or Mac, it will come up on both.

Its a bit of a pain, as I don't have everyones apple ID emails, and it means starting a whole new chain of conversations with everyone. Small price to pay though.

Aside form that, everything is working perfectly here!! Full integration over macbook, iPhone and iPad.
