Went out to empty the hoover contents into the bin yesterday and heard some hysterical sobbing and crying, turning around I see a pretty young girl in quite clearly a very distressed state sitting on the kerb, floods of tears, mascara streaming down her face, clutching her wrist and wailing with pain. Quite cleary Eastern European, as I approach a lad is arriving on scene who obviously knows her, he's trying to get her on to her feet and calm her down - I'm half expecting to be involved in a fight between a couple as I approach..

As I get closer I see the source of her anguish, her right index fingertip has gone, I can see about half an inch of clear fingertip bone exposed, blood all over the kerbside - I sprint back to my house to grab some kitchen towel and shout up to the wife who grabs a clean tea towel from the airing cupboard - I call for an ambulance, at this time my neigbour comes out - she's a trained nurse and helps trying to calm the girl down. Neighbour discussed the situation with the emergency operator , agrees to take the girl to casualty rather than wait for an ambulance.

Turns out she's been posting Taxi cards through letterboxes, but this particular house has a dog that took a liking to her fingers when she tried to push the card through the letterbox - crunch... the dog is only a small terrier, amazing the amount of damage that he did to her finger....

I carefully put a sticky note on the owners door telling him to see me when he got back , for some odd reason I didn't attempt to post it through! he didn't seem all that suprised it had happened - I got the impression it wasn't the first time, he called the police to let them know about the incident, and later on called around next door to thank my neighbour for taking the girl to casualty. He remarked that he'd found the chewed up fingertip and half a false nail in his hallway....ew

Surely the dog is classed as a dangerous animal by the police if this is a common activity that along with the fact the owner doesn't seem that bothered surely makes me question why he's allowed a dog.

Doesn't sound too pleasant!

I kind of disagree with this, the girl stuck her hand through the letter box into the dogs domain, her finger was trespassing and paid the price.

A post box can be used by anyone so at least there should be a sign warning of a dog. If the dog attacks someone then it is clearly dangerous

Sorry have to disagree with you their, if a dog is that high strung about a finger entering its domain. what would it do if a child entered to gather a lost football.
Theirs protecting i.e barking and then theirs attacking which this do has done.

If the owner had put a notice in clear view saying do not put hand through letter box thats ok, though personally dogs like that should be trained better.

However since the op doesnt mention any note i'm going to agree with everyone else "kill it with fire"

I think actual human presence would be different though to just a finger through a letter box, I would doubt the dog would have attacked if she had walked in through the door? Obviously I'm just speculating.

Solution, get a wall mounted letter box, or beware of the dog signs.

owner should be forced to either block his letter box or put a guard behind it....

a shame for the girl... and I'd hope you exageraged about the owners lack of concern...

the dog did not necessarly mean to 'attack' the girl it probably jsut grabbed at the post...

Ah, that must have hurt. :/

It's not about the injuries for me anymore, it's about the possible infection. After what happened to my leg after an accident, I'm probably lucky I still have it after the infection I got from leaving it. :o

At least she actually went to the hospital straight away.

To be honest I don't recall seeing a sign, I'll have a look tonight again. In any case I reckon he's in for a legal rollercoaster over this, particularly when postmen have been claiming thousands for merely cutting themselves on the letterbox flap !
