Our Bullmastiff caught a burglar last night

With regard to revenge or poisoned meat, he's a house dog and only goes outside supervised. That aside, he will also only eat food provided by us and only then with permission. So while I'll be keeping my eye out I'm not overly concerned. :)

Rainmaker is a dog trainer of 20 years (including Police dogs), besides you've never owned a dog because you've got a completely skewed perception of a dog's intelligence, and behaviour.

That has just tickled me pink. Non-dog owning internet experts telling a 20 year dog training veteran what he does or does not know about dogs. Ha.

Well you asked a snarky question, you got a snarky answer. But here...

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/mum-five-year-old-boy-who-mauled-3087802

This womans kid was left permanently scarred by their dog and they didn't have it destroyed. In fact she wants to offload it to someone else. The Shar Pei is a fighting dog. Perfectly legal to own in the UK. Had it been a Pit bull "type", japanese tosa, dogo argentino or fila braziliero, the police could have confiscated it and destroyed it themselves. That baby that was killed by the Alaskan malamute not that long ago? Happened on their property. They didn't have to have that dog destroyed. And it would be the same for any other breed that attacked or killed someone on the owners property, unless it was those four listed under the dangerous dogs act.

The only issue I have with these 'evil dogs' killing babies etc etc... is why leave the dog and baby alone in the same room anyway.

I have a wonderful dog, really well behaved and extremely placid. But I'd never leave her alone with a new born. Its like leaving it alone in a room with a rabbit :/ .... prey drive, off the charts!!

Must be a nice natured dog to be involved in that & not properly hurt the intruder, I was hoping the story would end with the dog bringing an arm back or summit. :p

Nice dog.

I guess it's a zoo's fault if someone climbs into the Tiger enclosure and gets eaten to death too? I don't have any real sympathy for the burglar, he made his choice and got more than he bargained for. As for kids climbing fences etc, well they shouldn't. Whenever I kicked my ball over I used to knock and ask politely, I would never climb over, especially if there was a dog that weighed more than me running about.

If the dog was that poorly trained, surely Rainmaker would be hosing the remains of the burglar of his patio right now? Sounds like it tugged the perpetrator about and warned him off.

But it's ok because some of the armchair experts have walked a dog or 2 in their time so have much more experience to make their incorrect judgements on.

Brilliant.

Some of the replys are awful. People need to stop posting absolute rubbish. Most burglars don't carry knives or screwdrivers. The reason for this is that we know who they are and stop them regularly. They don't like being locked up for going equipped.

"Chavs"rarely go back to a scene of crime for "revenge".

You have a great dog.

cute llil doggy! Good boy Hatton. To those going all wah wah wah think about it, what it a lone guy doing dressed in black at 10:30pm at your back door knowing your fence is 6 foot high!? Rainmaker clearly knows what he is doing so you keyboard warriors should listen to him.
Rainmaker get that dog a nice big bone from the butchers please I insist.

I completely agree with you. As I said in another post about the Malamute killing that baby. Those are high energy dogs. Like really high energy. You can attach them to a sled training cart and run them for miles and they'll still want to go further. Why get it as a pet unless you're prepared to put the kind of energy into them that they need? It baffles me. A dog like that will be bouncing off the walls. To then bring a new born baby into the family, where the dogs have been the main receivers of attention... take your eyes off it for a minute and what happened happens.

My own bull terrier, when my brother / sister in law and my nieces are over, there's always someone in the room with the dog and the kids. If I'm leaving the room I make a point to say "watch them for a second". The dog and kids are never left alone. And the kids are always told to be gentle when petting the dog. All it takes is a kid roughly pulling the dogs ear and it to snap back and it can do some damage. My brother has the same rules with his own lab pup. But it's no different with any other type of dog, such as a collie or a lab or a springer. Again all high energy working dogs that are supposed to be out in the field working, but are the nations favourite family pets. They're all capable of doing some nasty damage, or indeed killing a baby / child regardless of the breed (at least the bigger ones, the smaller ones can still inflict a nasty bite and are actually the breeds most likely to bite).

Brilliant story - also made my day, i have a Rottie regularly welcomes friends/family/kids to my house no problems at all. One night last week a house down the road was broke into.. the same night my dog dived down the stairs at 01:00 growling - let him out the back he was pacing up and down the garden around 1 part of the fence.... wonder if he scared them off?

Your dog should have a medal!! Anybody saying anything negative towards the dog is a moron. What would you prefer the dog rolls over and lets a intruder into the home to do god knows what to a innocent women?

Crazy world we live in.

Oh he will, he's got a whole pig's head for tea. He loves them lol In before 'OMG no wonder he's savage he eats raw meat'. ;)

All too correct unfortunately. Pekingese, pugs and others can and have killed babies and young children. You're right though in regard working breeds. Over the years I've worked everything from Mastiffs down to lurchers, foxhounds and terriers and that's exactly where they belong - at work. It's a shame that people think because something's cute looking and can win rosettes in the show ring that it automatically makes a good domestic animal. While that can be true (eg Labs, Greyhounds), mostly it's not (Collies, Spaniels, pulling dogs, scent hounds etc).

There's some irony in that statement, but for the sake of gentlemeness, I'll let it slide ;)

Yeah. I'm a sled dog owner. (Huskies, like a Malamute, just smaller!) and they are ridiculously high energy dogs! In fact I believe they are now the 2nd highest dogs up for re-homing. basically due to families not respecting what they need!

The story of the Malamute and the baby is one that really infuriates me. The public are just so blind/ignorant. To the point where my friends sled dogs have been kicked while out on walks etc...

Its basically just down to the owners being absolutely useless!

Seems like you have the rules down to a tee. Any time we have new visitors (i.e people that don't know our dogs) especially kids, not to be making sudden movements around the dog, and to always approach them where the dog can see them etc.

OP though, should be proud of your dog. god knows what would have happened if he wasn't there. He's a 'lil' stunner too!
