outlook.com webmail launched...

I had a look and switched back.

Found it to flat due to the lack of contrast, but more importantly it was slow and kept saving in the back ground each time I was typing away just to find what I was typing wasn't being added. Had to click back on the screen and re-type, drove me nuts.

Microsoft Says Outlook Security Will Be Better Than Gmail

Hahahahahahahahahaha.

According to the rep, Microsoft has in fact looked into using the 2-step security method, but chose not to take that route because only a small number of Gmail users actually use it (and it's a pain, to be honest, but effective). Instead, Microsoft wants "to find a strong solution that everyone can use, versus just the 1-percent of users that figure out how to navigate a bunch of additional setup options."

Well, I won't be using Outlook then.

Why does it matter if relatively few people use it? This is Microsoft - it's not like they're so strapped for resources that they're limited to only catering for the majority. I thought they were trying to reclaim technology leadership?

The awkwardness of 2-factor auth goes hand in hand with its effectiveness. There's no way MS can come up with some solution that's just as secure but much less of a pain in the bum.

It just seems like MS is culturally less concerned about security than Google is.

Wait, you won't use it because it doesn't have a two step login method? Which would imply you are paranoid enough to think you are now at risk because of it?

What's paranoid about it? Gmail offers better security than Outlook. Outlook doesn't have any compelling unique features to counteract that weaker security, so there's no incentive to switch from Gmail. Not paranoid - just sensible.

It's not like the possibility of an email account being compromised (when only protected by a password) is especially remote. It happens all the time. The incentive to hack email is great, because accessing someone's email gives you the keys to their entire online identity. Sure, you can mitigate by having a strong, unique password and not using machines which are infested with malware. But why take the chance when Gmail has a feature which makes hacking your account practically impossible?

Indeed. It's surprising how many relatively high-profile sites can tell you your password when you forget it, rather than allowing you to reset it. I wince every time a site emails me my password.

I seem to have 25GB of skydrive space, I think that's because I took up one of their offers last year where they just randomly give you 25GB as opposed to 7GB standard.

If you download Microsoft Skydrive via Windows Live Essentials 2012 you can sync any folder on your machine with your skydrive account - It's a great backup utility!

I don't like installing applications for that, would prefer it if they allowed explorer to handle the file transfers like map drive e.t.c.

There was a third party util that did this - mapped a drive and it uploaded the contents - it wasn't that great. I believe that functionality will be in Windows 8 though.
