Over use of "mate"..

A select few of my friends who used "mate" a lot have now moved onto "boss".

I'm from New Zealand, I tend to overuse both mate and bro... It's not a demeaning or insulting use, it's a respectful overture for friendship in most cases and a referral to my mates that I consider them a kind of extended family. There are no negative connotations.

Me and my group of friends are not surfers, but we say dude lots. Don't think any of us say mate very often, if I don't know someone I tend to use fella if they are a fella of course.
