Why is everyone going on about the forums? They are part of the company, they won't be going anywhere. I expect very little will change externally.

Anyway congrats Spie! What's next? :)

MM will defo go.
Why change it to 1000 posts to enter?
Forum members free delivery will go too.
The company buying will have looked into this already and made their minds up.
It is costing XXX from the business that we have just taken over so we have to get rid etc.
I think it is all down hill from here.
You have got AMD\Nvidia charging the earth for cards that people can't afford so the market is shrinking.
You go into any games store and ask for pc games....
Either they don't stock them anymore or they have them in a 2ft by 2ft display 2 inches from the floor in a corner.
Most of the games are ported over now too.
What's the point of spending £100's to play a game to perfection on a pc when you can spend £200 on a console that will play them all.
Also, why have a games company spend £1000's more to develop a game for a shrinking pc games market?
I hope that I am wrong but there is a reason why Ocuk is being sold.
Fair play to Spie.

PC market is shrinking... remove forums to **** off our loyal repeat customers
(needs a meme pic of some sort, perhaps the advice dog)

yeah, i think the forums are staying

Spie was always very open about how the forums cost much more than the revenue they brought in. I seem to remember a figure of £10k per month being mentioned (although that does seem rather excessive).

I wouldn't be surprised if the forums as they are, changed significantly over the coming months. It could result in a breakaway forum. Who knows?

If it resulted in a migration, I feel that it would be short lived, and in the long term the community would dissipate. Still, 12-13 years is damn good going. having been here from the early days, it's has been awesome. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Indeed.

*tips hat* It's been a pleasure serving with you all :D

Changes always happen when a company is taken over.
The company that is buying has different ethics etc.
Whether it works is another thing??
We will have to wait and see...........

It's not even just company policy that has an impact. Even the change of a senior manager within an established company, not even the company owner themselves, usually results in "Must change something to justify my salary, regardless of what, or any actual benefits". We've all seen it within our own fields I'm sure.

They'll change the background to pink. Mark my words ;)

If memory serves, Mark and his wife are the only shareholders. It's very, very rare for a company of this size (and in this sector) to be owned by one individual.

Congratulations guys!

You don't need to worry about the new owners messing with things too much. Some value will have been attributed to the forums already and I'd be shocked if anything major was changed. I know the commercial aspect of these forums is downplayed but the free PR they generate is better than 100 magazine adverts, trust me.

10k a month for a forum? Surely that can't be right.

Depends on all sorts of factors, but I can't see it being right.
I suspect that's a 10k per year figure that's got mangled somewhere down the line.
~£1k a month will get you a decently specced managed dedicated server.

At a minimum (no redundancy) you're going to need a pretty beastly MySQL server and a front end web server, plus 10mbit/sec of bandwidth. You could easily spend a couple of grand a month. If it really is £10k, I'd imagine it's something the new owners will look at.

There's always the chance that some or all of the current directors are staying on, at least for a time.
