Overclocking an i7 920 D0 - 4.7GHz

i want the 950 to take advantage of the 23X multi [24 with turbo]

it will be an expensive upgrade for the slight increase and i will probably still run my rig at 4.4GHz 24/7

but it will give me a lot more headroom when overclocking

my 920 is limited at the boards BCLK of 224
but is a great chip with a fantastic memory controller - something which should make its resale value quite high

using 224 on a 24X multi will just be the icing on the cake

i was considering a 975 but cant see me getting muck higher than 5.3GHz
which should in therory be achievable with the 950

[plus. dropping 1000 boys on a chip would be silly]

i will wait until ocuk get stock of the 950 to see how it performs

Thats the bonus of ordering from OcUK, you get a really good quality bundle that has been pre-overclocked to cut out all the hard work for you, well worth the money ;)

ermm? I'am sure rjkoneill would send me the overclock settings if I asked, as I always do order everything from OC, and everything else as well tbh, :-) they must love my Bank account:-)

although yes if I ordered bundle instead then o/c done already Nice one..

rjkoneill I have followed your thread with great attention and even managed to finally hit 4.5Ghz on my 920 under liquid cooling...altho it crashed during SuperPi...I was mighty pleased that I was able to get this high...I have set it to 4.3GHz for the normal gaming use...but thanks to you and everyone else I have finally cracked it on the 920 :D much appreciated...

I have posted this in the Customer Service forum, but I thought I would post it here.

The new machine I had since the end of april has been running fine. rjkoneill kindly told me the process to get my mobo to recognise all 3 2gb memory sticks, but now I am having big problems with my i7 920. It is a D0 stepping, but now running it under Prime, I have had to reduce the OC to 3.2, and even then the 1st core fails in the 1st minute, but the other cores seem to continue fine.

Does this mean that my i7 might be a broken chip in some way, as when it was 1st tested, it was all working fine for all OC up to 4.2

Edit: Phoned support about this, they said to make sure the core was nothing higher than 3.0, and it was a little so reduced this, and then tried @ 3.2 and the stress test seemed to pass after a few mins when it failed before, but over this level it failed almost immediatly.

Anything that I can try, as it should easily reach an OC speed of 3.6 as billed
