Overclocking my PS3

I bought it on PS3 and set the PS3 to output in 1080p, looks and plays fine on my projector. If anything i was shocked by some of the comments on here in various threads about the graphics.

Considering everything thats going on and the scale i think its technically a great game.

Maybe more the question should be does it look any worse than similar games in this genre or would you say its a class leader? Lets see how Saints Row 2 performs.

I may be off the mark, but isnt the game optimized for 720p, surely downscaling it to standard def will mean that the console has to do more work and therefor is likely to not cope perfectly.

I would imagine getting a HD screen will improve things for you

Secondary scaling has NOTHING to do with a games framerate or NATIVE resolution. Its not like PCs were by your changing the games actual running res/framerate.

Running in SD would be daft though right enough.

I believe the PS3 doesn't have a dedicated upscaler though and uses the cell for upscaling, so it must have a slight hit on performance

Disclaimer - i heard this ages ago and it may not be true

this may sound like a silly question but didnt GTA SA run at about 30fps on pc's ?
i thought these GTA games ran at the same fps on all platforms

the overall framerate on the ps3 version is pretty low all round, but at least its somewhat consistent. having a framerate in the 100's only to have it dip to single digits in a firefight would be be worse really.

A*******Men :D

honestly, I've noticed no problems with frame rates in the PS3 version yet, but I've only played it for about an hour. Also, i've not noticed any in the 360 version...But again. Only played it for an hour :p

It was turned off by default for me, I'm fairly sure.

maybe yours was a later version with a patch included....i remember having problems turning when reversing a vehicle when i was using a joypad if i disabled the fps cap.

could have just been my joypad it didnt like i guess

I've not noticed any major fps issues really - 40GB PS3 on a 1080p 40" sammy. Yes it dips a little at busy times but nowhere near chugging speed.

I do get the 2-3 sec freezes every so often but thats a confirmed bug rather than any sort of performance issue.

At the end of the day there is no excuse for console specific games to have any slowdown or technical issues. I would expect some on a PC but this is on the next generation consoles for christ sake. It's pure lazyness, I mean I have a huge PS2 & Gamecube collection and near on all of the games run perfectly with no slowdown at all.
Why with this generation have we got frame rate issues and worst of all v-sync issues.

I guess that consoles are the new PC's!

This is the weirdest thread I have ever come across - I mean, surely someone would have picked up on slow FPS in the hundreds of reviews spanning the net, I have read nothing but pure bliss on both consoles!

Methinks I smell a troll trying to rile the fanboys! Or a moron that doesn't understand a console!

Rich

GTA4 sucks on both consoles they sadly just aint got the power to run it, the pc version will be great i imagine, on the fps side i can't say i noticed any slow down on the ps3 version yet.

It possibly reserves this as default so even if set to 720p or 1080p the framerate isnt effected. Personally i feel like the front end it uses a certain degree of the systems memory/cpu etc but the user settings within this dont effect the games. Its like saying play the game in 2 channel instead of 5.1 and it will also help it to run better which isnt the case.

Upscaling is not something that requires a lot of power neither as proven with the PS2 using it with NTSC GT4 and some Xbox NTSC games being 720p and even 1080i native.
