Overwatch

Played two games, uninstalled.

First impressions count.

Shame, as I thought it might be like Global Agenda which I really enjoyed as a team based shooter.

I'll stick with Planetside 2, I know they are worlds apart gameplay wise but tiny maps just seem so dated.

I see people mentioning esports in relation to overwatch and I'm sorry but I just don't see it. Most of the competitive FPS players I know are generally steering well clear of this one and I think it's way too shallow of a game to provide any kind of decent viewing experience. It's a casual game and I don't think the type of players it's marketed at really care all that much for esports.

One of the reasons why CSGO is such a popular esport is because not everyone can do the things the pro players do because the skill gap is quiet large. This makes people want to watch it to see good frags/ plays and they're never in short supply. The problem with overwatch is that it's the exact opposite, why would I sit and watch a bunch of "pros" spamming "Q" every other minute and making "big plays" when I could just go do it myself in a pub game?

Without the viewing experience you don't have viewer numbers and without viewer numbers you have little to no sponsors. This then means smaller prize pools and a less competitive scene overall. Blizzard might throw a few high profile showcase matches to promote the game, but I don't think OW has any esport potential.

This post is extremely LOLworthy

Firstly if you played for a decent amount of time you notice its anything but shallow, their are many mechanics to master on each hero that regular people can not even comprehend, like Wall running Lucio around the death holes on many maps & providing healing & flanking. if this is casual game not a esport game, Then why is TF2 a big Esport? because its not shallow & can be both casual & a esport.

secondly, many Competitive teams including Team liquid have announced their Over watch Teams already way before the BETA

because decent players can dodge predict Q usage, i can already dodge multiple abilities like High Noon, Hanzo ult and mei Ult. Q usage wont be very Benefical in Comp play because most decent players will predict react

blizzard will be making this an esport

from a pro
Overwatch has a high-enough skill ceiling to separate the pros from the joes, but also lets the common man enjoy a taste of competition, whether they play that type of game themselves or enjoy watching it play out. After all, some fans are worried the game will be a watered-down version of all the other shooters that came before it. To me, that’s not true and big-named esports organizations are starting to see the light. EnVyUs recently announced their new Overwatch roster, and we're bound to hear more big news soon.

I don't think anyone expects it to be instantly as big as CS:GO, LoL etc, but I think it's interesting enough to have it's own competitive following, however large or small it might be. Some of the TF2 players (for example) have already made the switch and orgs like Cloud9 have got invloved (and the game is still in Beta!). Crucially it also has a decent spectator mode, which is a big help. I'd probably have no interest in competing but for viewing I think it'd be quite fun.

Granted it was an online tournament but I enjoyed watching this last month (god forbid if I got matched against any of these players): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrWWapPUkeI

I'm not sure how it will do on the eSports scene, but the high twitch viewers currently are primarily due to several popular streamers (with large numbers of followers) playing the game.

The spectator mode is good and the team aspect with certain characters working well together should allow for plenty of good plays e.g. https://youtu.be/VmnBsGormc0?t=8m1s.

I'm having fun with the game - feels great, very solid mechanically. I've enjoyed playing healer classes the most so far, saving a team mate from near death is very satisfying :D.
I'm not sure how I feel about the counter-play (switching heroes in a match) and how well that will work at end game, haven't played enough yet. Maps are good although it feels like objectives could be more complex/layered, but perhaps the character variety is enough.

Just to correct one thing, TF2 is not a big Esport.

As for Overwatch - they have already recruited a dedicated esport director.

You guys arguing about whether or not it'll be a big esports game should actually just wait and find out. Personally I think there's a bit too much hubris when games that haven't release think they will do well.

But the players decide, not the game.

The Reunited guys are ex BF4 Fnatic team, played with and against them soooo many times. TwoEasy is a plonker but the other guys are great.

edit...Also, this game is 20Hz tick rate for casual play and 60 for Custom games which is woefully low in 2016. There really is no argument about it, sure people might say 20 is enough, but then again they have got a ******* clue about a game that is advertised as a potential "competitive esport". I know a fair number of people in the biggest teams in the OW comp scene (from my BF4/Dirtybomb days) and they too say that 60Hz custom is just way too low.

This game has made me realise just how much I suck at fps games on PC, coming from a console background where I've always been well above average in fps games, has made me realise just how much aim assist carries you.

Wow where to start... how about the fact that you're so triggered by my opinion that you somehow think we should bet money on it? it's an opinion dude I really don't care if it turns out I'm wrong.

Secondly I don't think we see eye to eye, TF2 is not a big esport, it never was. It did and possibly still does have a decent comp scene but that is night and day difference between that and being a big esport. Although I will mention that TF2's comp scene can't be that great atm if 100+ comp players were caught using lmaobox. (premium cheat)

I also think that any esports based organisation would jump at the opportunity to make a team for a band new game even if it turns out to fail they'll still make (easy) money from it while it's still fresh.

so open beta ends tuesday but after that is there nothing till launch? even for people who preorder? tempted to get it but if its not playable for the next 2 and a bit weeks then why bother. seems strange, the games complete, they do a beta to test the servers underload, why not let the paying customers keep playing?

I'm sure there's a few things they'll want to tweak and this gives them time. Even if there wasn't one single issue raised as part of the beta, they didn't know it would go smoothly beforehand so it's a sensible way to plan the launch.

The only way this game will become a premier eSport is if Blizzard have a HUGE (read endless) pit of money to throw making it so.

There is scope for interesting/competitive teamplay in an organised setting but at the heart of the game each hero is extremely shallow and are hamstrung in "carry potential" (not a fault of the game, just by design). Heavily telegraphed alternative map paths hardly count as "depth".

Went in with zero expectations but ended up playing something like a 5 hour session. It's super casual but a lot of fun. Very quick games, easy to pick up and play. Certainly after coming from dota 2 games that can take 35-60 min a game.

I don't see this being in anyway a big e-sport game. In my eyes TF2, COD, BF4 etc are not really that successful on the e-sports scene.

The thing is it doesn't need depth to make it as an esport, just look at Hearthstone, Blizz have a huge following.

It might not end up as big as CS:GO/DoTA/LoL but it could easily have a pretty decent run as an esport...just look at CoD, it still has an okay following and it's the worst game around...

How many card games have the same financial support as Hearthstone? You can not compare that to the FPS scene.

I can see myself playing this game a lot, jump in have a bit of fun and jump out but I seriously doubt I would watch it. I wager my Ferrari 458 on that.

After the 3-4 hour honeymoon period I got bored of this game, coming from several hundred hours of TF2 there doesn't seem to be a lot of longevity!

I crumbled and have pre ordered cheapest I could find was £28.86(origins edition),CD keys is now £31.

Don't get my key till release day though.
