Overwatch

no idea why they say 30GB though, the open beta had all the content that the game will have on launch according to them and overwatch was under 6GB for me in beta

Just purchased from Battle.net, not had to download anything extra since beta and apparently ready to play.
Roll on midnight.

I foolishly ignored the open beta for this, now I'm tentative about buying it blind so to speak. I was a big fan of Dirty Bomb on steam, does it play anything like that?

Its a slightly slower version of TF2 with more variety of characters, tactics and style.

I enjoyed and have played a lot of DB. Overwatch is everything and more.

*Edit. That is the answer I was looking for; thank you tlrBeta. :) Though is it really slower than TF2, maybe even faster at certain times. :D

For me it feels slower due to limited capacity for rocket and pipe jumps etc...but yes it does feel similar speed at certain points.

Ps. I was in the beta from the start and its very enjoyable :)

Plays a bit like tf2, but instead of loaf-outs, you have different characters that fullfil niche roles, and also ultimates.

Rounds are much shorter, because ultimates. You tend to get big pushes, and either win or loose.

It's very good, a bit more casual as it's more accessible and straight forward (few buttons, infinite ammo, very specialised roles), and you have that big 'push-to-win' mechanic with ultimates, which players need to counter (very MOBA like).

Dunno about its staying power, but technically very competent, and easy to find game (like a better version of TF2 quick match).

Missed the betas as well...one main question...is this is a game I can pick up and play or do I have to spend hundreds of hours grinding to unlock everything?

Pick up and play - though you will need a little time to understand ultimate's (special move of each character), best team compositions, character counters etc....all good fun stuff to know, instead of just playing to unlock the "best weapon" on the game.

There are no in-game unlocks that affect gameplay. You unlock chests for leveling but that only grants skins, poses, taunts and all that cosmetic jazz. At the core the game is a hyper competitive shooter (think Counter-Strike or TF Classic, Quake 3) but with slightly more complex gameplay due to character abilities.

So there will be a bit of a learning curve figuring out what each character can do and when to make best use of your abilities, learning the maps etc but it isn't all that complex and there is nothing gated behind XP/paywalls that affects the core gameplay.

Cool, I'm good with there being plenty of depth to learn the game, I just don't have the time or patience these days to grind for weeks to be able to experience the full game.

Very much pick up and play. All unlocks are cosmetics. You have access to all characters and their full range of abilities from the start.

This is one of the biggest attractions of the game for me, that you can dip in whenever you have time and easily find a quick match on whatever character you want. Logging in is fast and easy, logging out ... less so :)
