Overwatch

I guess you have just had some really bad experiences with comms in OW and I don't think I'm going to change your mind

I think this is it. It's a shame. I see it as quite a selfish move myself, but if it's what you need to do to enjoy the game, we're not going to persuade you otherwise I guess. :)

Best is to just find some friends who do use comms well and try and team all the time. If you're 3 or 4 in a team, using comms, that's enough for me. It's a shame if the other 2 or 3 wont, but at least you have some co-ordination. I guess I'm getting better at Soldier as more and more people are adding me and actually asking me to come play, which makes it easier. Make use of the 'notes' on friends to record what people play and what they're like.

Just finished my placements after just turning 25, my god. I heard competitive was suppose to be a completely different game? Instant bastion/ Hanzo lock in's. 3 games had leavers. Many Hanzo + Genji games. I had to tank or heal most games, often solo...

Won 1 Drew 1 Lost 8.

Rating? 1400. Heard somewhere that personal skill is the determining factor? Most games finished with 2/3 gold medals, with some games spending a fair bit of it on fire.

Here comes the climb out of hell :D

Oh and comms? Think I had one game where people spoke to each other..

@balky12 Win/Lose those games you were going to get a similar rating. Because it is your first competitive season it used your hidden MMR or skill value to determine who you should be placed with. So if your first 25 levels pre-comp were spent trying out all of the characters and not doing particularly well on them, which you would expect because you were learning the game, then your SR will be low. If you had medals that's good but things like K/D ratio, accuracy etc are what it judges your performance on. if you have a gold medal with 2 elims that's a gold medal but still bad.

I would suggest you duo up with someone to climb (3 and above stacks are treated as an advantage).

So that hidden skill rating will also affect your SR gains in competitive. If it thinks your SR is higher than your hidden skill rating you will gain less for a win and lose more for a loss, the reverse is also true. So if you've ever watched a pro streamer go from bronze to GM they will gain lots of SR. Jeff Kaplan said in a recent interview that they were able to follow a streamer doing it and that the system took very little time to correctly identify then as a very skilled player and award them lots of SR for a win.

The other thing to remember is that you always place lower than your actual skill rating, Blizzard do this so avoid anomalous season highs and also make people feel good by being able to climb. So your actual rating should be something like 1600-1750 maybe I would guess. You are naturally going to get better at the game anyway the more you play it so your hidden MMR should climb along with your SR over time.

So you're saying you are aware of every counter / combination in OW and would never listen to advice / ideas ?

Although I'm aware it makes me sound more arrogant than I'd like... yes - kind of... I wouldn't go as far to say "every" counter/combo but for the heroes I know how to play well I'm aware of how the other team might (and should) counter it, and I'm aware of what synergies I should be capitalising on with my own team. I also know what switches I will probably make depending on what happens, and I pay close attention to the kill feed and whether we are struggling due to something specific the other team are doing. I've never heard anyone make any suggestion over voice comms like you describe (i.e. polite and constructive) - most of the time in my experience it's just frustrated lashing out trying to blame whoever and whatever they can...

how hard is it to press 'p' and click the speaer to mute someone, takes maybe 1.5s

By that point my concentration and focus on the game (both as a result of the toxicity in general and going into the menu) may have been lost... it sounds pathetic and silly I agree but it happens; I just can't cope with it for whatever reason!

I guess you have just had some really bad experiences with comms in OW and I don't think I'm going to change your mind, but you are hamstringing your own potential to rank up if you refuse to communicate by default.

If I were solo-queuing a lot you might be right, but I'm generally in a party that makes up 50% or more of the team anyway... Besides which I think I'd rather stagnate at my current rank and enjoy the game more than rank up a bit but have a terrible time doing it

Played this today for the first time in months for about 2 hours just now. Just played casual to get used to the game again and in every game not a single person other than me was using voice comms. Just pointless without them at any level.

Placed at 2155. Happy with that considering I've only had the game a few hours in comparison to most. Won 6, lost 4 in the placements. I played trash in two of them however.

Now to play some proper comp.

Just to let you know it can be really hard after your first placements, I ranked down loads when I first started.
If it does happen don't be put off though you can soon rank back up again.

You're not wrong, lost 55 in my first game after. It was a very close match but I died far more than I ever have. Usually I'm a survivor and keep re-grouping but wow, what a relentless match. Went on for at least 30 mins. Escorting the payload and we escorted one all the way purely on overtime and managed to claw ourselves back only to lose by a few meters on the last one. This it was 6/7 in the end! Was fun, but wow it was tough. Learnt a lot though and got better towards the end so hopefully can be more useful.

Wait, you lost 55 SR for a single loss in your first game after placements ?!?! No loss streak or anything ? That doesn't sound right.

Yep, for sure. Was 2155 and now 2100 after that one long match and not played since. I must have been awful :D

It just means the game placed you higher than it thinks you should be. The SR losses will even out when you get to your "true" sr.

Same if you're lower than you should be, you'll get 50+ points for winning.

Ugggghhhh.

I usually rank mid gold and that does me fine. This time around I had done a couple of placement matches and left it for later. My little boy (5) likes to play Vs bots when i'm not using the PC; and it gets me XP and boxes so I let him have at it.

Somehow he's managed to come out of the bots games and do my last 8 placement matches... suddenly SR1400... :(

Battled my way back up to 1899, but I just can't get a run of decent teams to tip it over the bar into gold. So frustrating! Especially when you're playing your heart out, 4 golds, and you still lose because your team won't push through the doorway or stand on a payload and instead want to skirmish forever until the timer runs out.

Had to stop playing a couple of times and clam down; a new experience after always playing against/with gold/plat players previously; the difference in play style and situational awareness is quite incredible. I now know how Diamond players must see me in my awful goldness :D

Wow sounds like great match!!!

Urgghhhh, that was a horrible game! Stuck with a bunch of Russians screaming report because I chose Widow. Let alone I had the most elims by a mile... And the enemy team actively hunting me down lol.

Probably a matter of time until I get some form of ban if kiddies keep it up like this.

Anyone fancy playing some games tomorrow? My mains are Widow, Zen and Mei.

Played seven ranked games last night. First three with one set of people I group with quite often, but they had a couple of others I've not played with before. I don't get my main at any point (Solider) no problem, I'm happy to try and fill, we get battered each game. Not even close.

That group disbands. I join some others I often play with and decide, screw it, I'm jumping on Soldier right away, we win 4 straight, ridiculously easy too.

First half of the night, no fun at all. Second half, awesome. I really should just get better at some other chars, although actually my Rein was quite effective and still we lost. I guess I just have no faith in other people DPSing :)

Comp is all luck. Down from 1600 to 1100 and just can't escape. No team play, no voice comms nothing. Enjoy this game but getting a bit frustrated now...

You really do need the right team to get you places, this game solo is difficult. People (at this SR anyway) do not want to work as a team.
