Overweight

Hah, you make being fat sound like being part of an elite club of noblemen.

It's whatever you want it to be. Some people simply love food + drink and are genuinely interested in it and take a pride in it as well.

In some countries in Africa it is :D

no no no no no.
do not skip meals. infact, eat more often.

Indeed, I find it amusing when people who want to lose weight say "but I only eat one meal a day and I'm hardly losing weight!"

When I was losing weight I was eating five times a day. Now I eat six!

That is the exact reason people are overweight! Eat when you're hungry, it's just so obvious

Not eating enough makes your body go in starvation mode, slowing down your metabolism, increasing your weight gain.

3 meals a day, or many smaller meals staggered are ideal, just keep your energy levels at optimum.

Binging on carrots at 9am is hardly going to make you fat.

Only obvious to people who know very little about how the body works and how to go about a healthy life style, as morba said little and often is the key it keeps your metabolism working and stops your body wanting to hold onto fat because it doesnt know when its next meal is coming.
One meal a day may have worked for you but for the majority it wont

Am currently on the slimfast diet because it is 'easy' as I don't have to physically do anything preparation-wise. The basic premise of it is,

Breakfast - 200cal milkshake
Snack - 100cal snack
Lunch - 200cal milkshake
Snack - 100cal snack
Dinner - 600cal home-cooked meal (instead I have a 200-300cal weightwatchers ready meal)
Snack - 100cal snack

It sort of follows the eat things throughout the day to keep metabolism up, and it seems to be working. Obviously the milkshakes can be switched for meal bars and things like that for variety.

Honestly, a couple of nights on the beer alone will not be sorted by a few 30 mins sessions.
If you want an increased metabolic rate for a longer period of time then do weights (not just circuits either, proper lifting where you tax the system).
Stopping beer / lager and changing to something else would be a good option.

I understand weight training is well known for increaing your metabolism - but is it *that* much better pushing yourself running / cycling?

Also, maybe one night on the beer with a curry would destroy all his hard work from a flab fighting pov, but he'll still live longer and feel better :)

you should never feel hungry.

That's the most absurd statement I've ever heard!

I eat when I'm hungry, usually this is once a day when I'm not working.

If I'm not eating enough, and my body is in "starvation mode" (also a ridiculous myth), and my metabolism has slowed and my weight gain has increased, how come I only weigh 65~kg?

The only way I can put on weight is by putting on muscle. I goto the gym, do 3-4 muscle groups and cardio, then I have a very big appetite, so I eat plenty of fish and veg, and I'll gain a few pounds after a few days when the muscle soreness has gone.

You only weigh 65KG because you hardly eat anything.

If you only eat 1 meal a day your body is forced to make that energy last as long as possible, therefore your metabolism slows down. Should you decide to suddently eat 3/4 large meals your body will store the vast majority of it as fat.

It is not a myth...

Also, you do not gain 3-4lb from muscle after a few days in the gym.

Im 5' 9 and 70kg. I think i look a bit fat really but not really overweight. I have started eating small amounts every 2 or 3 hours instead of big meals. Drinking water more often and running once a night around 4km.

I have been doing this for a week and feel a lot healthier, pitty it gets to the weekend and i drink and eat crap. Are well, as long as im healthy in the week!

Just under 6ft and weigh about 63kg's. :D

I eat badly too, had my RDA of calories in just choc bars on a lunch break at work once.

Yes, I dont have the figures to hand (read them in an actual book rather than online!), but by doing an intensive weights workout in the evening, your body will be craving calories well into the next day, compared to just up to bed time with an intensive cardio workout.

In terms of overall calorie loss I think it was dependant on the type of cardio workout you do, as some target fat burning compared to calorie burning.
