Owen for England?

Why do people still think he's clinical? I've seen him miss loads of chances already this season that my cat could have scored

The point is with Owen (and ferguson has mentioned this as well)

is he gets into those positions all the time. imo he would get loads more goals if he got the passes. Ive seen him play for Man Utd a few times and there isnt a better english striker who manages to create space for himself to get into those positions but often his Man Utd team mates didnt pass to him. (dno why maybe they hadnt seen his run)

So definately i would take him.

Rooney
Defoe
Heskey
Owen
and either Crouch or Bent.

Cole i suspect wont be fit (injury) and Walcott would pick among the midfielders

He hasn't played much and hasn't played that well in the league so at the moment I wouldn't take him. If he plays more and starts scoring more then maybe it might be different by the end of the season.

I'd take him and leave Heskey at home. And not only based on his hat trick last night. He's got good movement, I don't think he's as clinical as some people make out but he doesn't waste nearly as many as a lot of players. He's also still pretty nippy despite turning thirty next Monday.

Same birthday as me! :D

Rooney
Crouch
Defoe
Bent
Owen

He's not even 30, age has nothing to do with the decision, people can play at the top level at 30. The debate is whether or not he's good enough, that's what he has to prove. So far he hasn't proven enough imo.

Agreed age has nothing to do with it. Look at Drogba 31 and player of the season so far for me. Followed by Giggs 36.

Owen isn't going. Capello doesn't like picking players who don't play regularly and he has never been in a Capello squad despite plenty of opportunity to call him up.

Personally however, I would take him - super sub, he could have a real impact from the bench. I bet he could bag goals against Slovenia or Algeria when we rest the likes of Rooney (assuming we have qualified by game 3 :D )

Normally two, but Heskey has been injured/not playing.

No, he plays Heskey up top and Rooney as a second striker/attacking midfielder...as long as Rooney is fit his preferred formation is one up with Rooney, Gerrard and another off him.

Noooooooo!!!!!

We cant possibly take Owen to the World Cup - anyone who disagrees, please cast your mind back to the last World Cup where, within 5 minutes of his first game, he attempted to turn (OMG what WAS he thinking!?!) and ended up on the treatment table for the remainder of the tournament!!

His fitness just isnt reliable and he's lost what made him a great striker in the past - his pace!

I've no issue with a one-off game but when we are restricted to only so many players in each position, we cant afford to waste a slot on such a gamble - especially when there are better candidates out there!

StevieP

*edit* of course now I know he will be picked and win the world cup for us with 8 goals!! :D

So the requirement for getting picked is 2+ goals week in week out? Guess we won't be taking any strikers then

Still scored 8 goals from limited chances this season, pretty impressive for someone who is "easy" to mark.

LOL for me yes...he doesnt start and when he does he doesnt score ie missed quite a few sitters already...so kindly take your rolleyes and shove it where the sun dont shine;).

But hey you keep bumming the lad...theres no way he should be picked for England whether he scored 3 or none last night...hes not even fit half the time...id rather take that big lumbering idiot Heskey over him in all honesty.

Different type of players really, if Heskey gets injured, who else is there for his role? Crouch is **** in the air :(

I'd only take him if he was playing regularly and is fit next season, if not then no he wont go. Definite so far is really Rooney/Defoe tbh.

I've highlighted the word that defeats your argument.

and if the world cup was only 38 games long and we play a team with all 5 strikers, we might score 100 goals in it and win. That probably won't happen though.

DM said something good

I hope he is playing more from now on, his fitness is good I think, just needs time on the pitch now.

The match last night shown how good he (can) be, the team was all over the place in terms of people in positions and he scores 3 in the champions league, this is not Wigan or Hull they were playing.

Probably not.

Like it or not, we've settled on a formation with a big man up front who can occupy the CB's and Rooney just off him; this means Heskey's already booked his seat on the plane. Something people fail to recognise is Heskey's not there to do anything but create space for others, which he's been doing so it really doesn't matter how much of a donkey he is.

Carlton Cole will probably go as cover for Heskey as he's possibly the only other English forward who can do the job Heskey's being asked to do and it's looking extremly likely that Defoe will get the 4th spot to provide us with something different.

If we only take 4 strikers then he's got no chance of going and even if we take 5 then the likes of Agbonlahor, Bent and Crouch are all ahead of Owen in the pecking order. Unless Owen plays regular football between now and the end of the season then he's got no chance of going and even if he does play more games it's still highly unlikely.

Of course it won't happen... Just saying we have a lot of goals in our strikers. Strikers scoring goals is always good. :)

personally i dont think he has the legs or fitness reliability from recent seasons and i dont like his lack of burst pace against top defenses. theres a reason torres, villa, kaka, eto, messi etc are so good, its they have the touch and burst pace after it to make the room to get a glimpse on goal, owen used to have this but i cant see it anymore aginst a quick defender. hes got the touch and hes still got a great nack for popping up with a goal, and his positioning is pretty spotless still, it just seems a bit of a gamble to rely on him. maybe a sub position.

i think fergie needs to play him more and well see how his season goes, but as of right now, i wouldn't take him, he doesn't have the match fitness, especially at the top level.
if rooney and owen can get a link up working over the next few months at club level that could be hugely beneficial to england come the summer, but as fergie is using him sparingly i cant see it right now. though id definitly take owen over crouch (i plain dont like his football technique and think hes detrimental to creative attacking play, long ball arghhh)

Mickey does always seem to get the sympathy vote. I always think its a shame he left Liverpool as he did really well there. He was never really given a chance in madrid and his career has been downhill eversince. OK; joining MU was a coup but I'm thinkig its too late.
