So from 6th April 2016, it's against the law to own a dog that isn't microchipped and registered on an approved database.

Am I the only one who wasn't aware of this?

Appendix 5: dog microchipping
This was a supporting detail page of the main policy document.
Lost and stray dogs cost the taxpayer and welfare charities £33 million per year. A microchip makes it much easier to reunite a dog with its owner.

Microchipping will reduce the burden on animal charities and local authorities and help protect the welfare of dogs by promoting responsible dog ownership.

Under the Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015 – new laws that we made in February 2015 – it will be compulsory for all dogs over the age of 8 weeks in England to be fitted with microchips from 6 April 2016.

Dogs will need to be microchipped and registered with their keepers’ contact details. All keepers, including breeders, must keep these details up to date. The only exemption from the requirement is where a vet has certified in writing that a dog is unfit to be microchipped.

Before the new requirements come into effect, pet owners or keepers can get their dogs microchipped free of charge in a number of places. Many vets also offer free microchipping as do other animal welfare organisations and some local authorities.

Once the new rules come into effect, if a dog without a microchip comes to the attention of the authorities, its keeper may be served with a notice requiring the dog to be microchipped, and may face criminal prosecution and a £500 fine if they do not comply with the notice.

Anyone breeding dogs will be responsible for microchipping their puppies before they sell or give them to new keepers. All imported dogs will need to have a microchip. Breeders will be required to register their own details and these will be recorded against the microchip for the life of the dog.

Microchip implanters must be trained and competent. Lantra have an approved training course.

Is this going to be another law that the police routinely ignore Burnsy? Like the Dangerous Dogs Act?

On 6th April 2023 it's against the law to have a child that isn't microchipped and registered on an approved database.

This needs broadcasting really, there will be LOADS of people completely unaware of this.

I don't understand why you wouldn't get your pet microchipped by default? They could be stolen or get out and go wandering. At least having them Microchipped gives you half a chance at getting them back.

Ten quid can get you about 30 fags or 8 tins of Stella.

I don't own a dog yet I've known about this for ages.

Seems pretty sensible to me. Its clearly aimed at making identifying owners of problem dogs easier, but also doesn't really come with any downsides for everyone else.

Because people choose not to? Or purchased their dog from Dave out the back of a van? Who knows

Either way, some aren't chipped, we have two dogs in out house, the only reason I know of the change is because.my partner has told me...not heard anything in the news or telly.

Pretty pointless in all honesty, there was a bit on the news about this a couple of weeks ago and the amount of chipped pets that still have either previous owners details registered against them or the current owners old details is rather large and therefore they may be there but they're of no use.

My wife was going on about this last night.

Ours is done but apparently our local council in conjunction with a local vets is doing free micro chipping on the estate where we live for those who cannot afford to have their dogs chipped.

Yeah we just heard about this and got ours chipped. Only cost a tenner. Got him groomed while we were at it and now he is all soft and shiny.

That is also covered under s8 of the regulations http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukdsi/2015/9780111125243

New keepers must update the database or will also be committing an offence.

Seems to be a bit of negativity against this.

Me personally think it's a good idea.

Myself and my partner have found a couple of "lost dogs" which haven't been chipped which is majorly annoying when it comes to finding the owner. Luckily they got returned safely.

But something like this should be broadcast more widely, e.g. TV, Radio etc...
