Own a Dog? Not microchipped?

The cost of chipping is sod all, Any good breeder should have the dogs chipped before it is sold with the paper work supplied, this way you know its been done, and if not its traceable back.

From the looks of it, it will become an offence for a breeder to sell a dog that isn't chipped.

This is the first I've heard about it, although we don't have a mutt at the moment (I suspect my vet would have warned me if needed).

How come it only applies to dogs and not other animals?

Dogs are really the only animal that can cause issues if they stray from owners.

Cats can fend for themselves and don't attack random people. I bet you never look twice when you see a cat around but if you saw a dog and no owner you would at least think about reporting it as a lost dog?

Probably because dogs tend to be taken out on walks and let loose, which can result in injury to another person or animal, when the dog behaves unexpectedly.

Dog breeding also has a pretty sketchy history and if breeders are recorded with owners, it makes for a easier way to clamp down on illegal breeding and selling of unauthorised breeds.

Is it worth applying to cats? Not really, though i personally believe all animals that are taken outside your property should be chipped.

The only reasons why people don't get their dog chipped:

-Dont want to dish out a few quid
-Dodgy dog (illegally bred, dangerous, kept at a place that does not allow them)
-Too lazy

Those reasons are not good enough to not get their dog chipped.

^ Same here. No idea why an owner wouldn't want it done. Quite aside from the emotional need to have him returned, our dog cost £2K, so it's not money I'd want to lose.

 Must have come with some cool upgrades for that price.

On 6th April 2023 it's against the law to have a child that isn't microchipped and registered on an approved database.

If only. Have them removed by the age of 18 if they have behaved themselves :D

As others have stated I don't understand why people have pets that aren't chipped. That includes cats.

Isn't this because dogs are seen as property and "owned" where other animals such as cats are not?

Like for example, you have to report it if you run a dog over (not sure if this is law) but you do not have to if you hit a cat.

This is coming from the back of my mind somewhere.

Edit:

Probably similar or tying reasons to this;

A dog (as well as a goat, horse, cattle, ass, mule, sheep and pig) does come within the remit of the Road Traffic Act and is a reportable accident so you are required by law to report it to the police.

Like a dog reported run over it is more likely the owner will be informed, more so if they're chipped too. I suppose.

All pets are property. You're thinking of reportable animals as part of the RTA.

Edit: Reading into all this is like spaghetti, laws for cats, laws for dogs. Like cats are exempt from being "fenced in" like dogs should be but you can do a cats owner for criminal damage..

Head boggling.

I've got two cats which are both microchipped, which I think should be a standard thing with cats and dogs.

All this talk of registered owners of dogs previously in this thread makes me wonder if they'll be coming with a V5 document (or perhaps more appropriately a K9 document!) containing various information such as number of previous keepers, bowel capacity, etc!

It appears so as it was in the paper a couple of days ago but I hadn't known before that.

Hmm it was getting advertised months ago... Mine was done for free at the vets end of January. Quite the needle. Looks like the needle you'd shove into soil for the readings.

Three dogs here not a clue about this till now.

Don't really care either to be honest. I'm not going to lose my dogs becasue I'm not a retard. Maybe mandatory lessons on how to handle and care for animals properly might be a better investment.

Or maybe a £10 microchip registered to you is worth doing to be a responsible owner? What if someone stole your dog?

About time this came into law.

Meh, We have a 17year old unchipped Jack Russell. We've never even come close to losing her and she's never had aggresive tendancies. She's half blind and deaf as a post now and I don't think I'll be putting her through the rigmarole of getting her chipped.
