Paddlesports (Kayaking, Canoe, Stand-Up Paddle boards)

I was told not to store in a bag outside due to mould and paint coming off over time. My GT is on a rack in shade not in a bag and has the breather scew removed when stored. Has been fine like that.

I don't think the gladiator is the sensible option. The sensible option is to get what you actually want!

That's over here though, i assume mould is a much lower risk over in Spain. Although i thought it was supposed to be fine, as long as you left the bag unzipped a little to allow moisture out. Especially if kept under cover.

Well, it's sensible, in that it does everything i need it to do very well and at a much cheaper price point of the alternatives. I'd also like my parents to be able to use it or let friends/visitors be able to use it and i wonder how happy i'd be doing that with something like the Generation.

@Skidder

I don’t think I’ve imagined this. But I recall you mentioning a 40 mile paddle with kayaks. Yet I cannot for the life of me find the post in this thread.

How did you find it? I imagine very tiring and assume it’d take around 12 hours minimum.

I’m eyeing up a challenge to do the length of the Lancaster canal. It’s around 41 miles and flat water so no benefit of river flow. Trying to decide how do-able it is and how likely I am to achieve it!

Assume by SUP?

Assume by SUP?

Yeah from memory he was on a sup and others in Kayaks. I’m sure I recall him saying it was hard work to keep up.
I know how quick people can go on a cheap sup with a kayak seat so a proper kayak must be a fair amount faster!

I’m thinking 14 hours including rests should be doable, assuming a fairly leisurely 20 min/mile.

It’s more whether my back could take it. I notice pain at the bottom of my neck on long paddles as it is. So probably something I need to fix before tackling something silly!

Was going to say toruing kayak would make short work of that distance.

I was out in an open yesterday. Was great fun practicing rescues. My dry pants/semi dry top work somewhat well. Still get a bit of water coming in at waist but, more damp than sopping wet.

Hi, yeah it was 2 days with an overnight. Everyone else was in recreational touring kayaks (stable 12 foot tourers for the most part). I was on my 14 foot SUP. I was destroyed but in a good way.

Kayakers were all pretty new to it. I didn't struggle to keep up but was totally runied by it! I was paddling fairly hard compared to them. If they were better paddlers would have been harder (mostly just mates of mine in loaned boats, fit enough but not good paddlers).

First day was longer than the other mid 20s miles second approaching 20. Lots of carrying over locks which takes real time and energy. Easy to lose 20-30 minutes a lock. Lunch with a few pints like proper athletes. Much harder over all than i thought it would be but great fun. Same group would have done something similar again this year but was tricky for obvious reasons.

Ah ok, didn't realise it was split over 2 days. That makes it a lot more manageable! I'm debating a one day attempt. Although it could be an opportunity to try "wild camping" potentially.

Actually doing it over 2 days would be good practice to see how i'd cope on the 11 Cities tour as that's 5 days of around 25 miles a day.

Spoke to the guy from Fatstick Spain again and he's planning on opening a shop/bar in the town where my parents live. He's planning to hire out the full range of boards (including their carbon race board). Depending on rental prices i might not even need to buy something over there. He's also offered to lend me a board for December and show me around his shop because he won't have opened by then. Seems a great guy.

I think what we did would have been possible in say 14 hours without lunch stops and if you rush through the locks. If you are no locks probably very doable in a day but wild camping would be ace.

Yes, that's the benefit of the Lancaster canal. There are no locks to contend with along the whole stretch.

There's also an aquaduct that you go over which would be cool.

Maybe you need a trip up North to join me!

Def up for a waterbon OcUK meet at some point. I saw mention of southport at some point in this thread and I am doing some work there at the mo (well remotely presenty at least).

There's a decent inland lake there. Around a mile long. It's also the base of SUP North, although those guys seem more into foiling and wings at the moment than anything else it seems.

Cheers.

Paddle arrived today. It’s very light although there is a small part of me that wonders if id be better with the large blade. It feels small yet in inches it’s actually a bit bigger than my Starboard Enduro.

Going to order some clear 3M tape for protection. It’s a lot cheaper than the RSPro tape but still offers some protection which I think I need as I’m clumsy and have a habit of changing things so it’ll help preserve resale value.
