Paddlesports (Kayaking, Canoe, Stand-Up Paddle boards)

Is that all boards? Last time i spoke to Gary, they were expecting a few shipments, but i suppose they may have all been pre-sold.

Have you got a specific budget in mind? I've generally noticed the cheap ones aren't as bad as they get called for, especially if it's only for occasional use.

I've not been out for a few weeks now as i've been running a lot. Hoping for maybe a beach trip or the Lakes on Saturday. If we head to the Lakes you're welcome to join us, although i'd expect around a 10 mile paddle if you're comfortable with that :)

If we go to the sea i'd likely used my Fanatic and i'm not sure you'd want to try my 27" Gladiator on the sea :p

I'd probably spend the first half an hour falling in and ruining everyones day! I'll be quite interested next year though!

How did your paddle go? Did you end up in the lakes or the sea?

I did just under 7 miles on last night's paddle. Getting used to a sea kayaks edge and using it to turn.

Hoping I can be more regular at the club.

Ah, sorry i missed your earlier email.

I didn't manage to get out, we ended up taking my mother in law out shopping for a car so didn't get chance. My friend got a pretty good 12 mile paddle in though as the weather was one of those nice cold crisp bright days. I've now not been out for a while, although i've been prioritizing running as i have a 45 mile run in February and so weekends are my long run days.

7 miles is a good paddle. How was it in the dark?

Ah that's a shame! 45 miles is a serious run though, good luck!

Darkness was fine, the docks are pretty well lit up anyway so you can see almost as much as day time. I need some neoprene gloves though as my hands stopped worked after 2 hours. Think they will just take the edge off.

Still hoping to buy a sup with any Christmas money. Hopefully they have sales?

Yeah looking forward to it, it's up and around Pendle Hill.

I bought some neoprene gloves and socks from Lomo and the quality of both is really good and the price is excellent. I also got some 3/4 length "sailing" gloves, for times where it's not as cold.

There may be some sales, i did see some decent offers around Black Friday at The Sup Co, but a lot were more on the higher end boards.

Oh, they are on the shopping list now. Thank you!

How are you getting on with your K1?

That is under cover for the winter now. I was getting fairly used to it and enjoying it but going to park it until spring now. I've only come out of it once to be fair but while the river is flowing fast and cold I'd rather be on a SUP. Looking forward to it thought. Someone just blasted past on a K1 with lights on.

Can be a bit grim on the canal at this time of year Timed my SUP visit during the week after flood waters had subsided (now flooding again!) however landing stages at the locks were covered in a slippery film of mud sediment. Fortunate take a foam kneeling pad which is good barrier against the damp / muddy surfaces. Still a great time to visit with all the vegetation died off the river canal is visibly much wider in size though now more exposed to the wind across the water meadows....always keep an eye on wind speeds.

Windchill was around 0c during though am sure feels colder on the water. Warm enough kit wise however feet are feeling the cold with 3mm boots. Funds are limited for an upgrade am going to test out some thick wool socks as liners. They feel comfortable on test fit

For paddling I like these open palm ones as you don't lose paddle feel

I have full gloves for wakeboarding but really like the open palm for SUP

So I went to Go Kayaking in Runcorn and tried both gloves and the open palmed mitt with a paddle in hand. My fingers go to wide for the mitt as a push against the paddle at the top if that makes sense so I've gone for a neoprene glove.

I can see how the open mitt wouldn't be an issue for me SUPing or open boating.

Have you got neoprene socks? I wear wooly socks, dry pants with sock, neoprene socks over that and a 3mm boot. Always been toast but, not stood on a wet board I suppose.

No unfortunate don't have neoprene socks though looking at what you are using seems the more layers the better. Should be able to squeeze at least a layer of lycra socks...as well as the thick wool. Standing staionary on the board certainly does not help with circulation

enjoy!

I wear a pair of sealskinz waterproof socks, then a neoprene semi dry sock and then a draining sailing shoe on winter sup (https://www.wetsuitoutlet.co.uk/2020-gul-aqua-grip-sup-shoe-grey-ds1004-p-26761.html). Seal skinz under boots would be good too I would imagine.

Also been looking at aquaplanet boards.

@Skidder did you recommend JP Australia. They have a board at £400 (the superlight) which looks good.

Merry Christmas and happy paddling!

Winter SUP is new territory for me (previously finished mid November & starting again late March)

Somewhat of a challenge last couple of week as rivercanal in full flood....can be a little hairy going down stream and hard graft getting back upstream depending on the flow as have automatic weir to contend with. Try to read faster/ slower currents as much as possible especially on narrow and twisty sections and stick tight to the margins where I can. Almost didn't make it back last week..... but stuck with (albeit at snails pace) to save a walk home. This week also in flood but half the flow of last week.

The thick wool socks are working fabulously under the 3mm neoprene boots now toasty...they also have the added benefit of being v long which helps keep legs warm.

Aim to keep up with weekly sup sessions throughout the winter....anyone else braving the elements?

......The river canal is pretty much in full flood again today all landing stages under water....not great pic but you may get an idea of the flow level. Hoping to get on the water Monday hopefully levels /flow will subside by then but right now does not take much rainfall to flood again.

Anyone around south Wales area who would be interested in going out on the water ?

I have a kayak but happy to meet up with any SUPers too.
