I have this massive 8gb file which is quite literally hogging my ssd space. Do i actually need paging if i have 8gb of ram?

I knocked mine down to 4GB, that's with 12GB of RAM.

Don't forget to turn off Hibernation and reduce the amount of disk space used by System Restore too.

I reduced mine down to 250MB and have never had a problem. And as well as disabling hibernation, I've also turned off system restore which takes up a load of space.

I can't seem to set it to any other size. I can either let the system manage it or turn it off completely :S.

When i set the minimum and maximum, it doesn't save?

Is it SAFE to turn it off?

I've already disabled hibernation so i've free'd up some space but i was hoping i could save more by turning it off

You can always move it on to a HDD and let the system manage it.

Hmm good point, i'll try that as i really don't want it there tbh hogging up all the space i need.

thanks

Right i've set it to 500mb minimum and 1gb max for now, i don't really understand what paging is for and what benefits i get from leaving it on.

Can someone explain please?

Cheers guys, glad i didn't turn it off then.

I've kept it on my SSD but reduced the size as said. 1gb should be more than plenty for storing info and errors right? Plus i can't see myself running out of ram anytime soon!

That's pretty much the same as I did, 1GB (min and max) as a notional amount should some be needed, without the OS thinking it can just run off and do its own thing (which can happen if you disable it). Kept it on the SSD since putting it anywhere else just degrades performance (more) when it is used. Then forget about it, forever.

i would move the pagefile off your ssd if possible because it will shorten the lifetime with all the constant writes windows will do

it's recommended to have the page file on the sdd it wont wear it out that fast i set mind to 800 min 1024 max it's all you need really if you have say 8gb ram or more

I disabled mine a long time ago. Never caused any issues and I've not noticed any performance impact either way.

Seems there is quite abit of uncertainty whether it should be left on or off and whether it should be left on the SSD or on a seperate drive..

Some apps require a pagefile or they won't even run. MS recomend the pagefile being on the SSD as SSDs are faster at the type of I/O windows uses for the pagefile than a hard drive.
