Paint mismatch

I've taken it back to him today and he is going to "see what he can do"
Initially he tried telling me there is nothing he can do, but fairly quickly changed his mind and said he can try and colour match it.

and to be clear the mirror cap was dropped off by the missus in the car it belonged to, the guy took the paint code off the inside of the door.
he chose that option, he didn't ask for the old cap to be left or explain that paint code alone might not match the original

Fair enough, in which case yeah, I'd expect them to try to match it properly rather than assume the paint code will give the correct result!

It's an 8 year old run of the mill car, doesn't really matter if its perfect......
Any business that thinks 'it doesn't really matter' deserves to die and die quickly.

You pay for a service, not for the vendor to decide if its worth the effort on this one...

In my experience most people in this industry treat women differently to men.

I'm confused, did you not take the mirror cover to the guy with the original colour still on them?
As all he'd do, is scan that paint, do a test on a sample piece, see it wasn't right, adjust the mix until it matches the test piece with the old mirror cover, then spray the mirror covers.

Taking someone something, such as a panel/trim, makes it pretty hard to **** up, as it's not like they've scanned the panel on the car, and you've driven away and come back to have it fitted to find it's worlds apart.

This is why you should never go by paint codes, more often than not another brand of car's colour can be a better match, along with their being XYZ variants over the years of the same claimed 'paint code' - you only have to look up an older generation car's photos, when it was brand new in X colour, to say the current generation, and the colour never looks the same; BMW Techno Violet is a perfect example, along with Atlantis Blue looking worlds apart.

At the end of the day the guy doing the spraying is the "expert" so you'd expect him to know the best way to do it.

In my experience paying an expert these days usually means either going back or finishing it off yourself  more DIY than car related but still applies to some degree.

Imagine how bad his crash damage repairs, let alone resprays must be

This is the frustrating bit, he has repaired my car before when I reversed into a skip and you cannot tell (Black Octavia)
he's been doing this for over 40 years he said, so, mildy frustrating that he has just used the paint code instead of using his experience to know that, that would likely have caused a paint mismatch.

his only argument was that the mirror was dropped off and he didn't have the car outside to match it against, but if he had asked I would have left him the old mirror cap (like I've done this time)

I think like others have said he just couldn't be bothered with it being such a small job.

Sounds like it was just a one-off then :) at least he's resolving it!

TBH, it sounds like he couldn't be arsed, because it wasn't worth his time/money, versus doing a bigger job in the same time window.
Which unfortunately happens a lot in the motortrade, along with other trades; technically it's 'fair enough' and you can see why it happens.
However that isn't your problem, and doesn't deliver what you require as a customer.

I know people that won't even quote painting or wrapping the odd panel versus doing an entire respray/wrap/major crash repair, for the same reasons - which I respect versus doing a half arsed job and taking your money.

Sorry to hear that you got let down, as in this instance, you have paid for bigger jobs in the past, so for further repeat business, he should do the odd little job like this now and again, as he know's you'd come to him for a bigger job, like you did before.
Ah I'm glad you've taken the old cap down to match it, as aforementioned, that is the best way, then they cannot argue the toss - as it either matches or doesn't, and that's a them problem ;)

Fingers crossed it gets sorted for you buddy!

TBH I woudlnt say either of those mirrors match moonstone silver, but the one on the right is by far the one that matches least.

Is there a possibility one of the mirror covers has been replaced before?
