Collected the keys on my first house purchase yesterday and looking to make it my own.

Have a few colours in mind but would like opinions on the quality of paint brands. Is Dulux the go to and worth the premium over something like standard B&Q paint?

I'm thinking as I won't be painting all the time that the additional cost is worth it? Will be painting four rooms in total and the hallway, stairs and landing.

Will also be painting a few doors too, including some built in wardrobe doors. Possibly the kitchen cupboards too. These will be done later though.

Valspar premium for walls
Dulux diamond Matt trade white (get the massive tub) for ceilings
Leyland water based gloss for skirting and doors
Kitchen cupboards is its own quagmire

I've used it for the last 7 years and never had an issue. YMMV. I always lose the receipt but I could have invoked their "love your colour" guarantee at least twice in the last few years

Years ago, dulux endurance 2 was awesome but they stopped doing it. I loved that paint. Didn't matter how you slapped it on, it always dried perfect. No flashing, you could scrub it to death and it wouldn't come off.
No idea what was in it, but it felt like damn concrete lol

I'd look at Johnstones now.

We have just used Johnstones on the kitchen walls and it does a good job and looks good. B&Q often have Johnstones on offer and when we bought ours it was buy 2x 5ltr and get another 5ltr free which worked out cheaper than anywhere else by some margin. The kitchen only took 3/4 of a tin but the rest is for the hallway, stairs and landing.

Another vote for Leyland water based gloss for skirtings here. Two coats of Leyland water based acrylic undercoat was applied first.

Depends on circumstances ; kids, pets, high traffic areas etc.

We have always used Armstead Trade in the past and has been excellent. As we are doing an entire house as the moment including doors, new architrave, skirting etc we opted for Dulux Trade as a recommendation by our decorator. Try find a local decorating center as they will serve the public not just trade and prices will be far far better.

We painted one room in F&B; it was a little underwhelming; ridiculously expensive and very poor coverage.

Do you have a Johnstones Decorating Shop near you? I swear by them, they'll mix any colour (I always go for their Farrow & Ball colour matches)

Johnstones Durable Matte for walls
Johnstones Matte for ceilings
Johnstones Waterbased Gloss for woods/door frames

If you know a trades guys ask him to get it all at trades price for you.

Thanks for the advice all, have a local B&Q so I'll check there but definitely going to check if there's a local decorators centre nearby.

People will only base it on their experiences really. I've used own brand paint from B&Q and it's been fine. Homebase as well was ok. I've used Crown that was poor, and Crown that was good. I've never had problems with any Dulux apart from the time I bought some of that non stain hard wearing stuff and it was like trying to apply Jelly to the wall. I had to thin it right down and it was just a nightmare.

Not many people tend to use Gloss on skirting and doors now. The fashion has moved more towards satin wood. I generally pay a premium now for paint because I hate decorating and want to have the upmost chance of it going well, lasting, and not needing re-doing! So I buy Dulux Trade and Diamond stuff.

Look into frenchic for front door and kitchen cupboards. zinser do a robust scrubable paint for internal high volume/humidity areas like kitchens and bathrooms and they also do allcoat for external trim
