Palit

Just wait until the next gen, it'll probably come before you make up your mind anyway :D

It's pretty difficult with so much conflicting information around. Some reviews say the 6970 is off the pace in Dirt 2. Others show it as being quicker than a 480 in the same game.

Some reviews say the 480 is a noisy beast. Others show it as being quieter at idle than a 6950!?

Interestingly Techpowerup got completely different results in Dirt2 than Anandtech did. Infact it seems that in Techpowerup's figures, the 6970 was 10% faster in Dirt2 than the GTX 480?

What do we make of that?

Not sure if I trust them given they put the fan noise of a 480 as considerably lower than a 280 in all tests

I'd say the fan noise on both 280/480 was about the same. I guess it all depends on what temp the fans increase rpm. You can always set the fan manually.

Yeah they run Dirt2 in DX9 and not DX11 where Nvidia have a major performance edge over AMD cards.
Fox]Some reviews say the 480 is a noisy beast. Others show it as being quieter at idle than a 6950!?
I know it's not the same but a 6950 runs at 24% at stock which is quiet as quiet can be, GTX 570 runs at 40% fan speed at stock which is just as quiet - both great at idle.

A 6950 at 40% fan speed is audible, much more than the GTX 570 at 40% fan speed, when playing games I can notice the 6950 increasing fan speed where as the GTX 570 I cannot. (I have owned both cards.)

To be honest if you use sound you woudn't really notice either card because you would be to engrossed in gameplay.

Not sure about the GTX 480 never owned one.

My understanding of the situation is that only the 470/480 with reference fans were intrusively crazy/loud, and to find the next loudest you need to start looking at 275/280/285's or ref cooler 4870/90's which are nowhere near as loud. Anything like a 5*** or a 6*** / 460 / 560/570/580 would be totally fine for sure if you were ok with a gtx280.

My 460 gigabyte OC is ridiculously quiet even under load. Its not even audible over my antec 1200 fans on the lowest, even with the side case off and near my ear.

Read the reviews (on OCUK's customer ratings) regarding the 570. Very quiet and cool.

tbh i'm not sure ide trust the reviews in the lightest when it comes to the subject of gfx card noise, after all, if you read some of the GTX480 reviews as well, folks claim there not noisy either.

To be honest despite the obvious issues with noise and reviews it seems everyone agrees that of the current generation of cards, the 570 is one of the quitest. Therefore if a 570 is still too noisy then no card will do - ie, it could be put up with.

I can't really explain why I keep being drawn to the 570. It's about £60 more expensive than an equivilent 6950 and it probably doesnt offer £60 more performance. But it just seems right somehow

I say get the 570 mate. If that's what the heart wants, then that's what the heart wants :)

If you get a 6950, you will always have a thought in the back of your mind thinking what it would have been like if you went for the 570. lol. :D

It's only £60 more like. If that amount is not a big deal for you then get 570.

On a separate note. I went from my 5850 to a 6970 recently (and yes, before people ask, why not go for 6950 and overclock it, I was lucky enough to get the 6970 cheaper than a 6950 from another member) and it is a bit noisier. But then that's only when it reaches say 50% fan speed which during normal gameplay it never has unless I do it manually. I can't hear the card over my 8 case fans. lol

People who had spent £400 on a 480 (Hello Raven) and therefore would literally fight until the last breath to defend the honour of the card in a valiant battle of purchase justification.

lol. I always laugh at that. That guy defended his card (the manner he did it) so much that a lot of people think of him when talking about a 480. I mean two people I met from this forums in real life recently even know him for that. :D

Fact is Fox really has no clue, gets a 480 somehow he has idle fan speed equivalent to my gaming fan speed and complains about the noise lol, plenty of 480 owners have stated the card is quiet idle and fine under load. Now he wants a 570 because it has a better cooler even though it has weaker specs than the 480, buy a third party cooler for the 480 and save £60, the indecision is getting boring.

Fact is Fox really has no clue,

Here we go - right on form, turn against me because I don't share your worship for the 480 eh?

Most other people in the thread with these cards have fan speeds which match mine, not yours.

Performance seems roughly on par, if not marginally better for the 570.

There is no question that from a value for money perspective, the 480 is an unbeatable card. The performance it offers for the money is staggeringly good - but for me personally I'm afraid the fan issue is such that I can't enjoy owning the card :)

I had ordered a GTX 480 Fox, as you probably saw on the thread, then made up my mind and went for the Gainward 570 Phantom. I think its an excellent decision. It cool and uber quiet.

Overclocked at 900 Mhz shaders from 750 no problems. Runs all my car games like a dream! This is going from a 4870x2. The only issue I had was with the nvidia control panel and I soon sorted that out!

Get the GTX 570!

Defending a GFX card? I'm just stating facts where's the defending, my card like many others are perfectly fine temp and noise wise, no defending needed. You're obviously very sensitive to the slightest noise and therefor a 480 with dual monitors was a bad idea me thinks, especially when it has a dodgy fan profile. The smart thing to do is put a third party cooler on it, but I guess if you're concerned over the loss of under £200 and or not confident of fitting a cooler then I guess you go for the overpriced 570.

How is invalidating the warranty the smart thing to do?

The 480 is old and inefficient - that is why it is cheap.

£200 spent on a GFX to me is not a big deal when it comes to invalidating the warranty if that means super cool temps and a silent card for next few years, doing this will no doubt extend the cards life way beyond the warranty period with being cooled so efficiently. And yeah a 570 still sucks the juice big time, it's hardly what I would call efficient.

The 480 being old ' if you can call 10 month old ' has got nothing to do with the fact it still performs the same as a 570 and is clocked lower.

Check the 6970 pulling the juice, looks a bit inefficient to me, right up there with a 570/480.

That all depends where you look:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/292?vs=309&i=228.229.233.232.231.230.234.235

Shows the 6970 is significantly quieter, cooler and more power efficient than the 480.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/306?vs=309&i=228.229.233.232.231.230.234.235

Also shows the 570 being a fair bit quieter, cooler and more power efficient than the 480.

And for the sake or being complete - 6970 vs 570
