Paranormal Activity

Just watched this now - very underwhelmed, especially as I had hyped the movie up in my head. Working my way through the Bloody Disgusting Top 20 Horror Films of the Decade.

Next up - The Mist!

Su

lol. Who the hell made that list? Elmo from seasame street?

Audition should be higher and Let The Right One is a worthy number 1... That film gave me the shivers. Session 9 is also a very good horror movie that no one ever talks about.

I just disagree with the amount of American horror movies on that list. Most of them are nothing more that carnival rides.

Yeah really. It was all hyped up to be really scary but I sat thru it all and when it finished I was like, wtf, is that it?

Meh, didnt hear any hipe...saw one movie trailer and that was it

Movies like this only work the first time you watch it. I tried watching it a second time and found it boring as hell. The first time I watched it I thought it was really good.

Still nothing on the Blair Witch.

Indeed...

But the Blair Witch? It was naff

Might watch it again one day...but i cant remember being that scared

The Mist is indeed a horror film, as is Shaun of the Dead. SOTD, however, organically layers buckets of humour amidst the horror.

but you cant compare them to serious horror films that dont try to be anything other than scary, you cant tell me shaun of the dead is is horrifying!

SOTD is comparable to Zombie land and vise versa, that is about all it is comparable too :p

The Mist and SOTD didnt even come close to scaring me.
Paranormal Activity though, had me scared.

All 3 movies were watched alone, in the dark, with nobody else in the house.

I think the film is now suffering from its own success. The film is pretty weak on itself and doubled with hype that it produced, it's just bound to land hard on its face with a viewer who isn't an overly hyper 16 year old.

What people have to remember is that the "horror" in this film is all psychological. What is scary about it, is 'what you can't see'. If "what you can't see" doesnt scare you and you are more frightened by blood/guts/gore, then this will film will seriously dissapoint.

Personally, I've grown up on a diet of guts/gore horror movies, so they don't scare me in the slightest.

Paranormal Activity on the other hand, worked very well for those of us who are frightened of "what you can't see".

Another aspect of this movie's horror is that if you are watching it with a group of other people, with the lights on, I honestly can't see it working as a horror movie. Most of the attacks of the movie occur at night and if you watch it with the lights on or in daylight, then it will lose its scare factor.

One of the scariest films I've ever seen is 'The Entity'. Nobody dies in that movie, but the problem is that nobody can actually see 'The Entity', which is what makes it scary.
