Part Worn Tyre Woes

The kind of people that normally buy part worns won't ever look at their tyres until M.O.T time or might give them the occasional kick. Tyre fitters like this are clearly exploiting that to sell dangerous tyres.

Lesson learnt for the OP I suppose.

Wasn't there something in the news a while ago looking to make part worn sales illegal or more stringent?

Would be the sensible approach.

You won't convince the type of person who buys part worn tyres

One tyre is bad, but on a set of four they saved £30 a corner so £120 overall

They're less safe or you don't know why it got taken off the rim. Well any car you buy second hand is no part worn tyres

They're mismatched or 10 years old. So what it's got more than the minimum legal tread depth

They'll perform rubbish. I'm not a race car driver

What about when you need to do an emergency stop. Ive not done one in years, plus ill just keep my eyes peeled on the motorway

You spend £20 on a tyre which is the only contact between the road and your car?

Nice pipedream sir but is this a single wheeler or a car with 4 tyres?

And to all those having q go a5 part worn tyres I think you need to use some sensibility qnd judge ment. Clearly this is a bad tyre but you know what thousands will be sold on amd have no issues.

Let's consider some scenarios. Your tyres are half worn and one gets an unrepairable issue. Are you going to change all four or even the two on the same axel just to even it out? What of your make of tyres isn't around any more? Mismatch them? Buy q new pair?

Redicolous. For most people decent part worn are just fine.

Braking performance is only as good as the weakest link in the chain.

But what you do know is that they weren't remis passed for scrap? Loads of reasons NOT to add every part worn tyres to the big polluter in the sky ed for an unknown reason.

I have no qualms in buying a used car with decent brand rubber on it and continuing to use said rubber until it needs replacement. I'd always however, budget for new tyres on any used car I buy, just in case.

Buying a part-worn, god knows why they were removed, but I'd wager that most part-worns are removed for reasons beyond that of replacement due to normal wear and tear. I mean, who removes a perfectly serviceable tyre?

Insurers when they write off a car for minor flood damage and the car or other similar issue?

Sounds like you buy part worns...

Insurers when they write off a car for minor flood damage and the car or other similar issue?

...and you're trying desperately to justify it.

Back to your only valid question:

Your tyres are half worn and one gets an unrepairable issue. Are you going to change all four or even the two on the same axel just to even it out? What of your make of tyres isn't around any more? Mismatch them? Buy q new pair?

If they really were only half-worn and irreparable, I'd buy two for the same axle.

Sounds like you buy part worns.I've never bought part worn a.

So you qre the arbiter of what's a valid question now? I have never bought part worn except on the last set of wheels I bought had 2 nearly new rears on them so kept them.

I just drove my mum's car home checked the tyres- nexen blue?!? Don't sound good but hey my the car didn't flip out or blow up .

I think you are massively over speccing what people should do for tyres.

More cars must get flooded per year than I thought.....

What drivel, they are imported from other country's with different tyre laws or come off crash damaged cars.

You kust not think very much as that was just an example. What about cars that die due to a rusty sill or wing or engine grenade or 10mph crash that crunched a bumper on a 1000 quid value Ford focus. There are l9ads 9f reasons why a car with perfectly usable tyres might get scrapped.
