Nowhere were Nvidia trying to say or imply it was a bargain. They simply put up the price, which is what it was expected given VAT and exchange rate.

You're the only one making any noise about it being a 'bargain'. :rolleyes:
 
Looking at the game benchmarks it's falls just short of a 4k gpu it's going to take a full fledged gp102 chip clocked a bit higher for it to be a 4k gpu

This is seemingly a very small core for a high end card. Nvidia hasn't done a high end gaming GPU under 500mm^2 in god knows how long, maybe the 7900gtx, around that era they were actually making relatively small cores. Since the 280gtx at least they've been over 500mm^2, with the last cores they were at 600mm^2, now it's what 470mm^2 and that is with a LOT of extra die space for a fat gddr5 bus and less dense memory controller to deal with higher clock speeds.

This is why you need HBM, because while you can achieve almost any bandwidth with any type of memory, this is the core they've decided on, to work with available gddr5x they've either determined more cores/clock speed would ramp well beyond the power budget they want to aim for, or more cores/clocks would be massively bandwidth limited. HBM would fix either, bandwidth limited, can easily achieve higher without an absurdly wide memory bus(for off package) the power and the number of chips you'd require. If it's a power issue, again HBM providing that bandwidth in much less power frees up a large chunk of power which can otherwise go to a larger die with more cores.

This is precisely the limits you hit with high power memory.

There is a reason Gp100 is 600mm^2 and using HBM and Titan is using a MUCH smaller core while limited to gddr5x. If they made this 550mm^2 with more cores and slightly higher clock speeds it would have as big/bigger gap than last gen between 980/Titan X.

From the four games I've seen tested at 4k, I'd say it's right there for 4k/60fps.

Unless you're the type that has physical pain if they turn a single setting down...

Get a clue, where did I say NVidia said it was a bargain? I'm saying that seems to be the thinking on some forums when the actual price was revealed compared to the rumoured prices. Actually reading might be in your interest instead of skimming over a post and replying with some waffle about what you think was said.

I agree it's disappointing to see such a small top end card, but I have no idea what you're talking about with regards to memory. Lack of HBM is not what is holding anything back. :/ HBM2 would be nice, but 12GB of 10Gb/s GDDR5X is not going to be posing any meaningful bandwidth limitations.

And given the efficiency of Pascal, calling it a power limitation where HBM2 would somehow 'make the difference' also seems quite weird.

I didn't skim anything. :/ Your whole point was that this was some intentional move by Nvidia to imply it is a bargain.

I dont see anybody doing what you're saying, though. People were expecting £1200 or more because of the Brexit-caused exchange rate dive, not because 'Nvidia'. Pricing it just like it should be priced(which still includes a hit for exchange rate) was not some marketing ploy by Nvidia, it is just the natural price of the product.

More than one person has said on here "cracking price" and "much cheaper than I was expecting"
 
I like how it seemingly gets great boosts with overclocking. It would be nice to see other OC cards but I guess time restrictions are part of that.

had a 1st world dilemma....

My HTPC which I'm using a lot more now i have a 4k telly has a 1070 G1 in it and while it does kinda game ok at 4k i have to turn a lot of settings down to game at a half reasonable frame rate.

My main runs real nice with a 1080 FE on my x34

I was gonna just get another 1070 and SLI them in my main and chuck the 1080 in my HTPC would have cost me another £540 with water block

well i can get nearly what i paid for the 1070 so i thought leave the 1080 where it is its great at 3440 UW resolution and the TX would be perfect for the front room UHD TV instead, my missus is gonna be so not pleased :o

as for water block warranty I've had all the last titan's and haven't needed to remove any warranty stickers for the block installation.
