PC dead psu smells. Some help pls

nah my last mobo even worked the fans but it was dead:( very doubtful its the cpu tbh you werent overclocking anyways u've made the first step mite aswell follow suite and build a new pc:D unless your strapped for cash try and get you hand on 2nd hand parts

I will have to get the same sort of Mobo though as i need socket 939 for my opteron 146 and I have 2x1gb sticks of OCZ (i think) DDR200 3200 (I think!!) memory. No need to get rid of that.

What is so good about the Opteron 146 or OCZ PC-3200 that you feel inclined to keep them?

There are plenty of motherboards from around £55 upwards you can use with either of below. With decent DDR2 from £20 why tie yourself to a motherboard that fulfills a requirement for DDR1?

Basically if you make the effort you can get a motherboard/CPU and ram for £140

OK, so taking into account my HD x2 should be ok, my gfx card is ok and my x2 optical drives are ok. If i get a new mobo/cpu and mobo

can someone spec me them then please as i have been out of the game of pc upgrades for quite some time.

I only use my pc for streaming mp3's, surfing net, and playing bf2 now and then.
Thats the main use of it really.

God I hope my HD's are ok.

Also, as present system is dead that means i cannot reinstall my new OS when i get all the bits on my present HD as I need to get the info off of the HD. So I will need to use one of my older HD 1st to install the OS (XP Pro) on, then get all the info from my 74GB raptor that presently has my OS and various other stuff on.

So if someone wouldnt mind spec'ing me a MOBO/ CPU and 2GB memory that would
be great as I really have no idea whats ok at the moment.

I will still use my PCI-E Gfx card though.

and would be good if i can still use my Artic Pro CPU cooler

Thanks guys. I am sure you all know what a head ache this can be.

I know I'm answering a bit late, but I think there's a possibility that it could be your memory. Have you got any spare RAM you can try?

Also, for speccing a new PC, what is your budget range?

EDIT: Nevermind, here's a spec for you, though if you have an agp gfx card you may need to buy yourself a pci express one as well as a CPU/Motherboard/Memory.

Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £103.49
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.50GHz (800FSB) - Retail £68.99
OCZ Platinum Revision 2 XTC 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) £19.99

Total : £203.39 inc shipping (which you'll get free anyway so -£9.50)

That system should last you a while. A fair graphics card should be a Asus ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) for £60.94 inc VAT. There are cheaper ones, such as a Geforce 8400 for £27 or an ATI 3450 for around £30, but I'm not quite sure how good these are for your uses, though someone else might....

Hope this helps :)

Late and not a lot of help but when i had a hiper psu blow on me it took the mobo and the ram with it. Being honest i would keep an eye out for cheap p43 mobo and cpu as they can be had very cheaply now and would be a significant performance in crease on what your used too. How about this for mobo http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-170-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1344 this for cpu http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-251-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=793 and this for ram http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-041-KS. That comes to a total of £167.72 and would give you much better performance then you have right now.

right, tried everything and mobo is dead, tried my HD's in a external device on a laptop and all fine.

So no point taking a chance and just buying a mobo then finding out my cpu or memory is also dead so ordered this...

Will this be any noticable difference to my present (now dead) rig of a opteron 146 @2.5ghz, 1gb memory??>>

Hope so. God damn computers, £200 this has cost me for a god damn Hyper PSU blowing up and destroying my computer. Hyper should be liable for this!!!!

I had my Hiper 580watt got bang a few years back and it didn't take anything with it thankfully. The fan somehow came of its spindle and half of it was sticking out of the grill and some smoke started to pour out. Got a replacement brand new and its still sitting in my cupboard as a spare.

You'll probably find that's broken too. ..My replacement sits in my old pc these days, but it started to tick when on for a bit not long ago and the competitor I bought from have ignored me when I have mentioned it. I don't think I'll buy from them again tbh or buy a Hiper PSU.

And you'll probably ntice a reasonable improvement over your old setup Magic so don't worry.

What graphics card are you intending to use? The PCI-E slot is limited on the Asrock mobo I believe, to X4?

I myself use the above motherboard, but more to give Windows 7 a try and add bits to, which I can later add to a P45 mobo.

You can see the rest of what I use in my sig, I am sure with 2GB of ram it may be possible to get a better overclock, though I think the board is a little flakey with ram at 333Mhz, 300Mhz seeming a better compromise.

I got a better CPU overclock (3.3Ghz) with 2gb of ram (DDR PC3500).

Thanks, just reading about being able to O/C that CPU. Been ages since i have OC so hopefully when this rig is up and running someone who has the same rig will be able to steer me in the right direction.

I am sure this will dome for a while anyhow. Just HATE being without a computer, strange how we become so attached to them. Mind you I think it is the data more than anything.
