"PC Games" Forum!

Posted profits recently I believe, which was always what they said, all going to plan, but not sure what that has to do with anything?

Do you include Nvidia as bribers for getting games optimised to run with their cards by the way?

Great - let me know when they start getting a return on their investment :p

What have NVidia got to do with anything? They pay companies for an advertising space at the start of their games, "Nvidia - the way it's meant to be played" or something, but let me assure you that all those games work equally fine on my ATi card ;)

I won't bother to let you know when they make a return, as you will just change tact when they do, as you did there :)

So Nvidia is not a bribe then? Yet MS or Sony paying for an exclusive game is? Why do you think companies agree to exclusive games by the way? just to spite the other console or PC? or more about getting their product sold more?

Mr Men, just because a game loads up with an nvidia ad doesnt mean that the game has been made to run crap on ATI cards, you mate are ignorant.
Drivers are what affects performance.
And you'll find theres games that have the NV advert on that ATI wins performance battle in(when it comes to certain cards)

And really mate, its hardly the same, ATI cards still run the games dont they? Cant exactly go buy a 360 game and whack it in your PS3, losing a few shines and sparkles can you.

Games always run better with Nvidia :D its just a fact :D

And I am not ignorant in the slightest, all my PC games run best on Nvidia :p

no they dont, nvidia are just the more powerful cards this generation, high end atleast.

In midrange and low range stuff becomes different, Intel also have the advert at start of games, think they were some when P4s were around, they wernt the best for games, far from really wernt they?

Aha, these threads are always a laugh but one thing I cannot stand are the claims that PC gaming is expensive compared to console gaming when in reality it's actually about the same, maybe slightly more expensive depending on how hardcore you are.

Please don't take these figures as 100% accurate because I'll tell you now that they're not going to be :D

The recent games consoles have a life of about 4 years before the next generation come out so let's go buy a 360 on launch.

360 Console - £300
Now we want xbox live for the 4 years - £160

That's £460 already and we've not got to the games yet which is where things get a bit tricky. If you shop online for games you'll most likely be paying £35-40 per new 360 game where as on PC some new games are as little £18 and normally around £25 so you're saving at LEAST £10 per game.

How many do you buy a year? 5-10? more? I'd say I get roughly about 10 so at a saving of over £10 per game that equates to a £400+ saving for the 4 years.

So that's what £940 I've got to spend on PC hardware over 4 years. If spent wisely you can easily play the latest games on good settings for that sum, maybe a little more but not much.

Also, don't forget that even non gaming PCs need upgrading every once in a while so you're probably saving £300-500 because of that too.

Of course, if you only play a few games a year then all of the above goes out the window and also it's always nice to have a gaming PC and console as they each offer different games. I love my 360 for it's racing and sports games but when it comes to fps/rts/rpg I much prefer my PC! :)

and with PC gaming you get try before you buy ;)
You get all the freeware too.

'Gaming' PCs are also useful for other things, its good to see consoles becoming more diverse too, but they are still nowhere near the PC in terms of versatility.

I think the only thing that seperates PC gamers from console gamers is their attitude. Pc gamers talk about their games, any problems and solutions, mods etc, whereas 50% of the console chat is about which which console is best.

iv got a mate who assures me the 360 pro-evo doesnt lag, so it just must be the PC doing it, and that halo3 is the best game ever.
well, then i said oh funny i think halo is a bit bland online, now having a 360 in the flat and all, and i watched him play my flatmate online on pes08 earlier, well isnt it funny how the lag suddenly appears for the first time then ey? :)

Don't tar all us console owners with the same brush as your mate, it's a common fact right now that PES2008 is laggy as hell, but a patch will rectify this. I remember the last time I played PES on the PC it was ridiculously laggy, again a patch fixed this. Nothing to do with the console.

The thing with PC gamers is that we're all in the same boat. There's not a lot of the bitterness that permeates most console discussions. If there's a problem, everyone jumps to try and fix it. With consoles you don't get that - it goes to statistics instead, used in countless arguments, tit for tat.

PC gamers are the mellow stoners to console gaming's bitter Glaswegian skagheads.

Haha, every version of pro evo has terrible lag. There's a patch on the way or so I've been told.

I bought Halo 3.. I got as far as the 2nd/3rd level before getting bored of its bland repetitive nature. I've not played it online much either, it's fun but nothing special. I wish I never bought it to be honest.

I felt the same way, but I only bought it for MP and its great for that in short dosages.

yea its ok in small doses, but i only rly found it fun cos i was playin with mates, otherwise its a bit dull in comparison to many FPS available with online play

Thats becuase Console games dont have the choice. If you want, you can just play the PC game as well. And it'll still look better than the console one.

However, you also have the CHOICE to tweak it and improve it still further.

PC games were very guilty of being tech demos back in the late 90s.
I found myself trapped in the upgrade path and always trying to make things look better, I think quite a lot of people who remember the Quake - Quake 2 days and Unreal will admit to this, it was almost about 50% of the hobby, I think without the tinkering, PC gaming or maybe video gaming as a whole would be very different.
PC gaming took off with sound cards and at first just basic colour cards being produced for business machines to run perhaps more mature versions of what was happening on the consoles and arcades, and then taking over from the Amiga, which was designed by the same guy who did the Atari VCS and 8 bit computers.

Interestingly John Carmack started coding games to get a game like Mario Bros running on a PC, and many of the other well known games designers will usually name a console game as being the best designed in their field.

People should look back at the history of the chipsets. Consoles have always been just cut down home computers designed with pricepoint as number one concern. Then again IIRC some home computers grew from console design, I think the Apple was designed by Atari employees?
And who remembers the programing cartridge and keypad for the Atari VCS before anyone says consoles are trying to be like PCs
The PC with its roots designed for business apps ended up taking over most of where the old home computers used to be, it was never the ideal platform for games but things moved so fast the upgradabilty was the winner, and the consoles have moved over what ground was left bringing them quite close.
It's all very interesting stuff spoilt by snobbery IMO.

I dont know about anyone else, but realistic graphics and pin sharp resolutions really dont do it for me anymore, so Im looking forward to playing Mario Galaxy for the artwork and game design and the unrealism of it all. Having said that, Im not sure if I can stomach Mario anymore as a character, I kind of wish Nintendo could apply a game like Galaxy to a fresh, very slightly maturer bunch of characters. Ive got a 5 year old who prefers Mechwarrior games to Mario
Although we also have to appreciate the games coming from Nintendo are coming from a different culture who seem to cope with these cute characters better.
