How come it's only a time limited thing though. It probably means I've missed a good chunk of games to transfer.

I imagine it has something to do with money. People have probably bought the same game on both platforms before (GoG usually offers extra non game content like wallpapers, soundtracks etc). Giving away this for free all the time is effectively giving away a free copy of a game that could be a potential sale.
They haven't done that for a long time have they?
I know it used to be standard, but thought they'd stopped that & stuck to selling the extras of late.

Just checked half dozen new games on their front page, no extras. Guess the good old
I use GOG wherever possible. DRM free games that I can download an actual installer for appeals to the old school gamer in me.
If Steam decided I was in breach tomorrow or went under, who's to say I could keep the hundreds of games I've bought with them.
