PC Gaming what state will it be in 10 years from now.

What apparent takeover of consoles?

Apart from online, I hardly meet anyone who seems to be into PC gaming, though in real life everyone seems to prefer 360/PS3. And given the expense of PC gaming compared to the cost of console can it sustain itself long term. Is it conceivable that consoles hooked up to HD TV running online word processors will start to replace the desktop PC for normal domestic use?

Take over of consoles :D

For the masses, less dedicated gaming market ...possibly.

For the die hard fans and people who realise the way forward...no

I'm willing to bet bigger and better. (Using the past 10 years to present day as a rough guide, looking back at Wolfenstein and comparing Crysis :p)

Console gaming, especially with the introduction of playing online, has gotten better in the past 10 years. However, I still think it's a step down from PC gaming online.

Perfect example, I was talking to a friend of mine recently,he's not into PC's and loves his 360. He shows me this "new shooting game" and it turns out to be some sort of Xbox360 equivalent of Battlefield/2. It looked ok, but nothing on the PC version. He was telling me about all the cool things like "Man, you can get 12 people a side so you get a huge royal rumble of 24 people!!!!!111oneone".

To this I replied "Dude, Battlefield isn't even oldschool PC gaming; try a game with 32 people PER SIDE that makes 64 PEOPLE IN TOTAL playing with potentially more if your server can handle it...all in one urbanised map". He couldn't comprehend how big the teams were and how awesome it could be.

I hope this Onlive thing takes off (or something similar that exceeds it). I don't really care whether the pc/console/whatever lives or dies. I'm not an unpaid shill so I'll support anything thats good.

PC gaming will continue because ultimately, it's the development platform for all consoles.. The only thing that holds PCs back is the aging technology.. which at the moment is years behind the PC. However, the different component combinations must be a headache for developers and is also it's undoing, meaning more money has to be ploughed in to a very niche market place (i.e. driver support etc) . The developer/publisher has to determine if the investment is worth the return, if any. After all, they are in the business to make money.

Do you think MS and Sony would prop up the PC games industry if it was running into serious problems for this reason?

That's a good point. As development costs increase could a point be reached where software companies think it's not worth the time or effort to test for all the different configurations?

Both my sentances and your quotes are conjoined, meaning that the publisher will decide what we see released on PC based on projected sale forecast from the a game on the PC platform. If they think the return will be too poor, then it we won't see it.. Simple as.

Until someone comes up with an MMORPG as big as WOW for the consoles, PC gaming will continue.

There is tha issue of piracy, but that doesn't seem to be slowing the publishers of DS games. As long as we have Steam, and similar equivalents, publishers should be happy enough.

At least your friend isnt a moron, as many console-only gamers are. I once had someone tell me that Halo invented DeathMatch.

i would imagine in 10 years they'll try to integrate PCs and consoles into one system. consoles are becoming more and more like PCs and this'll continue
what i dont want is it to be a one off system with no chance for upgrading parts etc
and i feel thats the way they're gonna push it, one box and you buy the next gen each time it comes out. hope im wrong
