Hi

Looking for advice regarding an issue with new build.

The computer randomly freezes, usually when idle or browsing, but is stable under load.

The event viewer shows WHEA errors around the time when the issue occurs.

The specs are:
Asus Prime z690-P
Intel i9 12900k
32GB Corsair Veng RAM DDR5
EVGA RTX 3080 XC3
Corsair RM750w PSU
1TB WD M.2
Windows 11

Things that have already been tried:
New components (All components have been replaced)
RAM diagnostics (Ran with 1 stick, swapped sticks, turned off XMP, ran memtest for multiple passes)
Different Drivers (windows defaults and manufacturers websites)
Motherboard Firmware (up to date on arrival)
Windows 11 installed multiple times (reset from disk, cloud, reinstalled from disk)
The issue occurs in multiple geographic locations (work and home)
No specific peripherals are used (they are different at work and home)

I am looking for any ideas or advice.

I have been reading that the 3080 GPU's can have power spikes up to several hundred watts and I was considering undervolting the GPU to test it.

I am looking for other users thoughts on this if they think this is really realistic that the GPU's could be so unstable.

Or perhaps a 750w PSU isnt enough for the 12900K and the 3080.

The only other thing that immediately comes to mind is to downgrade to Windows 10 and try that out.

If anyone can offer ideas or advice it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

If its crashing at idle and browsing which is not under load I doubt it would be the psu especially stable under load.

Have you updated the firmware in your m2 drive some people were having problems with western digital drives ?

Can you list these exactly, please? (which components and which model, e.g. was it the same one)

What does the WHEA error at the time of the freezes say?

A few 'easy' troubleshooters:
- Load Windows onto an external or additional drive, just to rule it out.
- Use the onboard graphics

What software do you run?

Have you tried disabling all low power states for the CPU?

How do you connect to the internet? (wireless or lan?)

They were replaced with the same components as part of the warranty. Apart from the case, cooler, and fans all components have been replaced twice.

I will eventually try a 2.5 SSD and onboard graphics if it comes to that, the creashes are random and the PC was fine for 7 days after the last warranty so it not something I can quickly replicate.

Software wise, its a clean install of Windows 11, only software is Steam, Origin, Thunderbird, Firefox

Regarding power states I havent tried this before (im guessing you arent simply talking about power management options) but I will look into it.

I connect to the network with an ethernet cable directly from the NIC on the PC and the Router.

Apologies Tetras, I am not sure how to do that, the post before I just copied the text out of the event viewer and pasted it.

The system isnt overclocked, I have tested without XMP, and I have tried the M.2 in a different slot.

The issue has been going on for about 8 months, its been back for warranty 4 times and had a full system rebuild (which is why all of the components have been replaced twice).

Before the full system rebuild I tested the system with XMP turned off, and during the first m.2 replacement I moved the drive to the second slot before installing a clean OS.

A fatal hardware error has occurred. A record describing the condition is contained in the data section of this event.

Ive also disabled the C states on the CPU now.

Can you go into the event viewer "fatal hardware" entry, copy the raw data to the clipboard, open up a hex to text editor (google can find you one), paste it in, convert it from hex to text and see if the text comes back with anything readable?

Nothing useful unfortunately, there is no consistent string of characters (max two readable characters). Nothing in the output looks like it points to any component or serial etc.

I tried to figure out the WHEA errors before but ran into the same problem, nothing in my output looked like the examples I found online which helped other users.

When I spoke with the supplier they said its usually related to CPU which is why the CPU, Mobo, RAM was first replaced.

How about downloading aida64 or MSI afterburner and turn on the logging? Set the polling frequency as high as you can (i.e. shortest interval). Might give some clues but no guarantees. IIRC aida64 is the best bet as it reads more sensors. Log them all!

That's unfortunate, a clue would have been helpful.

Yeah, I'd agree with them, it often is the CPU, or the SSD. On Ryzen systems it tends to be overclocks or memory instability, though there are faulty CPUs that can't run at idle. With your rig it is stock (except the memory, depending on XMP) and it seems pointless to limit the CPU's performance (e.g. by disabling turbo) because it freezes when idle, not under load. I guess you could try something like disabling the E-cores.

How often do the freezes happen? How do you unfreeze? (I assume the reset button?)

Do you ever sleep your PC or does it get turned off?

Thanks all,

Apologies for the late response.

I will give aida64 a try when I can.

All power saving should be turned off (I believe).

The freezes are random, its been a week since the system was rebuilt and this is the first.

However at its worst it would freeze 2 or 3 times every other day.

I have to hold the power to force a shutdown to recover.

Before the energy bills went up I would leave it running overnight and sometimes wake to find it frozen (the clock also freezes).

I tend to shut it down these days.

Thanks for all the advice today, I will run it for a few days and see if I get any results.

one thing to try especially with alderlake would be check the cooler and make sure its not tightened down too much, it could cause memory issues, as the cpu is pushed down enough to make some of the pins not touch in the correct places, memory is the classic problem you can get no boot problems, and randon freezes during boot and within windows, idle or load.

not sure if its been sugested but have you tried updating the bios?, newer versions fix memory compatibility too, but try the cooler mount first as its the easiest

I'd suggest removing the GPU completely and see if you still get the issue using the Intel graphics, if you've not already tried this?

If that fixes the issue, then it's a PSU/GPU issue. And you can try to find out if it's just a compatablily problem or an actual fault.
