PC Modding and tweaking = car modding and tweaking?

I love sleek looking cars, none of this carbon fibre bonnet or huge spoiler that does nothing.

If you see a car with sitckers all over it and chrome wing mirrors and and huge exhaust tip, you know the driver will be a show off and could easily crash into you.

Perhaps that would depend on the car and does not apply to all.

Is it not normal to like things to look good such as our clothes, homes etc? Do you call your mother an egomaniac for adding a new ornament to her mantlepiece? Your dad for changing the doorhandles on your house doors to match the rest of the decor? PC modders too for making a boring case look nice?

No of course not, they must all be egeomaniacs... right? :o

Why are you using the word egomaniac when I did not?

Unless you are exaggerating my point out of proportion, then attacking the exaggerated point...

Why do people buy trendy clothes? Why are designers making lots of money from clothes that are relatively inexpensive to fabricate?

Agreed, but that isn't "tasteful" modding. :)

Does the word "tasteful" mean anything? Who decides whether a mod is tasteful or not, because a lot of people think that their giant spoilers are tasteful...

My point was that you can't say whoever mods their car is doing it for their ego, when some do it for a hobby, and simply because they like to mod/tweak and improve on things. You made it sound like a negative thing, when their are great degrees of "modding".

And I know someone (acquaintance not friend) who has a giant spoiler on the back of his sax, by his own admission it isn't tasteful, but he thinks it makes the car "look mean". I don't think people buy things such as that to "look tasteful", stuff like that is most definately image.

So why mod the appearance, or indeed pay any attention to appearance?

What about when people put 'shopping lists' down the side of their cars?

why do you have a signiture pic?
why do other people list hardware.

why are you modding your mx5?

tasteful is decided by the person purchasing or using the item. not by someone walking by whos opinion means nothing.

Social reasons, linked with ego. Its complex so lets not quibble.

Basically, as I said before - I think that if you are correcting something to improve the look then you're right, its not barry - but 85% of modifications to a car are barry.

Non-standard light cluster = barry
Graphics = almost certainly barry
Aftermarket spolier = speaks for itself

why are you modding your mx5?

Looks standard from the outside... and if you look back, you'll notice that my comments were directed at most external mods

lol so far all i've done is add alloys...

Think i'll just stick a discreet spoiler on the back and change the rear lights (one is cracked) and then call it a day. :)

I think any sort of modding is down to personal taste. If you want different lights than go for it and the same for neon lights. I personally have a problem with the attitude of some of the people who do 'over-the-top' mods.

Myself, I had my windows tinted and silver pinstripe put down the side of my car. I think it helps make the car look better. I am also considering getting a taller spoiler and some engine enhancements once the money starts rolling in.

i never asked what your sig pic was about, i asked why have one.
the simple answer is because you can.
stop being so condescending maybe?

all mods are to correct the look (externally), wether you think it corrects it or not has no bearing on wether the person doing it thinks it makes it look better.

i have a non standard light cluster on my BMW, does that make the car or me barry?

clear side repeaters and colour coding would look nice on that clio :]

I care not.

I asked why you have one, not why others do. if you care not, then why are you even calling things barry etc?

you said changing light clusters is barry, my bmw has 3rd party light clusters, what is barry, the lights / me / the whole car?

Given that you are someone who has only changed his alloys why are we having this to and fro?

Because as has been said earlier in this thread, you have an incredibly condescending, "black and white" attitude and seem to love to fly through threads speaking in your bullet-proof absolutes and pseudo-philosophical twoddle. I usually genuinely cringe when I see you have posted in a thread, as I know from there on it usually goes pete tong and a nice relaxed thread turns into a mind-numbingly tedious debate and the atmosphere turns sour.

i recently asked if you could ignore people from specific forums only on a board, but its not possible.
im usually the same as you in this instance and am close to ignore!

I dont care enough about YOUR lights to call you barry, if you were so...

Hmmmmm. I chose that particular quote because I hope it will ring bells with people, probably sub-concious ones. Not because I like after-market car mods.

It depends...

The way I see things is that modifying something for the sake of modifying something is peacock syndrome. Someone wants to mod their car so "its theirs" to impress upon the world they are different if only in will, but most people are busy trying to get noticed rather than notice.

Aren't you two cheery. You asked, I answered. You then complain about my viewpoint. Did you want opinions, or mere agreeance.

I don't use the ignore button. I dont want to ignore a thing.
You guys sound like you would be doing us both a service if you take the initiative and press the button. PrEsS tHe BuTtOn... the pleasures will be incalculable... Do it!

Ahh well, just do it manually. :)

Hmm is it hard to fit side repeaters, is any re-wiring etc necessary? I'm a DIY muppet lol, not the best with my hands in a practical sense when it comes to electrics etc. And the colour coding, do you mean the side strip of black? :)

Hmm yes mate I was thinking about lowering it as the 15" alloys have made it a fair bit higher but isn't it quite expensive?
