Current build is in my sig. I game, but nothing serious. Generally strategy and some FPS games. No work use/AI/crypto etc.

I am thinking about upgrading the CPU (9800X3D) and GPU (5080 - the 5090 seems overkill). I also need a new case for better airflow and more room.

Outside of those, will I need up upgrade anything else to make use of the new CPU and GPU? Time for a new mobo? Will the PSU be ok for the upgrade?

Use your computer until it's unplayable. THEN upgrade. .Zero point in upgrading if your most demanding games are still playable at 60+fps

If you've got money to burn get a decent sound system.

Thanks for the suggestion. As with most things, I do not need to upgrade, but we spend (waste?) money on our hobbies - I am at least managing to talk myself down from the 5090 this generation...

On the basis that I would like to upgrade, are there tweaks to be made?

If you want to go for the 9800X3D you will need a new mobo and ram.

The 5900X is AM4\DDR4 and the 9800X3D is AM5\DDR5

Can you list the games you play? some favour the X3D chips quite a lot.

Cheap option is chuck in a 5700X3D for a good price and leave the rest as it is

So games like the Total War series, Civ, Stronghold, Football Manager, COD (for my sins), Borderlands and Company of Heroes.

Happy to upgrade the mobo and ram as have had the mobo a fair while.

I'd grab a 5700X3D, they can be had for around £130 currently, if you sell your 5900X you'd get most of that back easily, some of the games you've mentioned really like X3D cache (4X games often do for example).

Keep an eye out for upcoming reviews for the 5000 series, although I'd argue the most interesting card in the line up is the 5070ti.
