Current build is in my sig. I game, but nothing serious. Generally strategy and some FPS games. No work use/AI/crypto etc.

I am thinking about upgrading the CPU (9800X3D) and GPU (5080 - the 5090 seems overkill). I also need a new case for better airflow and more room.

Outside of those, will I need up upgrade anything else to make use of the new CPU and GPU? Time for a new mobo? Will the PSU be ok for the upgrade?

Thanks for the suggestion. As with most things, I do not need to upgrade, but we spend (waste?) money on our hobbies - I am at least managing to talk myself down from the 5090 this generation...

On the basis that I would like to upgrade, are there tweaks to be made?

If you want to go for the 9800X3D you will need a new mobo and ram.

The 5900X is AM4\DDR4 and the 9800X3D is AM5\DDR5

Can you list the games you play? some favour the X3D chips quite a lot.

Cheap option is chuck in a 5700X3D for a good price and leave the rest as it is

So games like the Total War series, Civ, Stronghold, Football Manager, COD (for my sins), Borderlands and Company of Heroes.

Happy to upgrade the mobo and ram as have had the mobo a fair while.

I'd grab a 5700X3D, they can be had for around £130 currently, if you sell your 5900X you'd get most of that back easily, some of the games you've mentioned really like X3D cache (4X games often do for example).

Keep an eye out for upcoming reviews for the 5000 series, although I'd argue the most interesting card in the line up is the 5070ti.

If I went with the 9800X3D and 5080, would the following work:

  • 5080
  • 9800X3D
  • Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming mobo
  • Corsair Vengeance EXPO 32GB DDR5 PC5-48000C36 6000Mhz dual channel kit
  • Keep the Corsair Rm1000x 80 Plus
  • Bigger case (not sure which yet)

Should work fine, the only thing I would suggest doing first is updating the bios to make sure the 9800X3D is supported and works first time

Just be aware the first boot can take 10/15 mins before it displays anything as it does memory training.

When I built my 9800X3D system it booted first time with no delay but I made sure the ram was on the motherboards QVL list

ocuk are asking £250 for the b650e-f. no way i would pay that (and i have a b650e-e board)...might as well just go x870.... the asrock pro rs wifi is £220..it's white...otherwise the asrock x870 riptide wifi...but if you're spending £250, I'd just pay up and get the msi x870 tomahawk. At least you'll have a led debug code screen on the mobo which helps when things stop working
you know with the 870 boards they all have dual usb4 sockets on the back and wifi 7...might as well get the upgrade if you're spending the same money...in a few years you'll get more for it also when you come to sell, or at least make it more desirable

I have had a look around and come up with the following:

Your Order

close
1 X MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard - £280.00
SKU
: MOT-MSI-03298

1 X Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 PC5-52800C32 6600MHz Dual Channel Kit - £233.98
SKU
: MEM-CRS-01224

1 X AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Eight Core 5.20GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail - £530.00
SKU
: PRO-AMD-03517

1 X Antec Flux PRO Full Tower Case - Black - £169.99
SKU
: CAS-ATC-03468

Grand Total: £1,225.96

My concerns are whether the case is big enough for the mobo and if the RAM is the best 64GB kit for the build?

The Ram you are getting is XMP ram, this is for Intel systems. You want RAM that is EXPO for AMD

Thanks, both.

Need to change the case, as apparently mobo is too big for it, but otherwise I'm almost there!
You don't the Motherboard is atx and that caseis a full tower that takes up to eatx motherboards which are even bigger .

You could top down to the midi version if you don't want such a big case ,check the specs between them so your happy.

If you don't want RGB memory then thees are good alternatives .

Thanks @mickyflinn

I thought the case specs said it supported up to ~280mm and that mobo was a >300+. Obviously, my grasp on this is ropey at best, so appreciate you clarifying it is fine!
Yes it does get confusing .

Make sure your happy with your choices ,do a final list and post so we can check it for you.

What CPU cooler will you be using ?
