Depends on the game, the frostbite engine stuff in multiplayer needs more than 2 cores IMO, however the pentium K in single player games would prob scale fine with decent graphics cards.

Out of curosity...how would a 4.6Ghz K-edition Pentium fair against an Intel q9550 @ 3.8 in games? My mate wants a new cpu upgrade for some MW2/MW3 online gaming and this overclocked pentium chip might be a cheap option for him...with a gpu.

got a 3.6ghz 9450 at home and a 4.4 Pentium K

Pentium feels much snappier in game

Think my CPU is poo:(

Got BIOS updates for both my GA-B85M-HD3 and GA-Z87M-D3H mobos. CPU OCs in both BUT will go to 3.8GHz when most settings on auto in both mobos.

Can't get to 4.0GHz in either even when CPU volts upped to 1.3v (all other settings on auto); most times both mobos hang on POST.

Is there anything I've missed.

I've had a very quick play with mine now and currently at 4.5 on 1.23v but only run about 30 mins of realbench and 10 mins of Intel Xtu stress test. Stable so far and a Max temp of 63 degrees so a promising start at least.

Did you figure out how to go above 3.8ghz? I have a GA-Z87M-D3H and I had the same problem but I found this guide: http://www.overclock.net/t/1401976/the-gigabyte-z87-haswell-overclocking-oc-guide

Its very long and I dont understand everything in it but I changed these settings and I'm able to get up to 4.5ghz. I havent tried for anything higher yet.

VRIN: normal
VRIN override: 1.75
Vcore: 1.25
Ring: 1.15
Uncore Freq 39

I'm not sure which of those changes made the difference and I'm sure I could have done better but for now I'm happy.

One of these at 4.4 would be roughly comparable to what 2nd Gen Intel?

I'm thinking my killed 2700k means time for an upgrade, and was thinking of getting an MSI Z97M Gaming and this to tide me over until I can afford a beefier Intel chip.

I'm fully aware that my 2700k would eat this for breakfast, but at the moment I am using a G1620, which means my 290x is severely crippled.

Pickup a secondhand Xeon E3 or Core i7 off Ebay or MM??

Well the problem is that my Gigabyte board is not much of a clocker, it was purchased for my seedbox, and can't get more than 4.2 out of my 2700k. That's why I bought the ASUS.

With secondhand 2700ks going for £150ish, I was wondering if maybe it was a time to leave 2nd gen behind, as I could get a good 1150 MATX mobo for £110, and this pentium to tide me over until I decide on a higher end 4th gen chip.

Seller of the murderous motherboard has pretty much said "Sorry this has happened, but you are out of warranty, bye!", and whilst I would happily sell the board on for just postage, I wouldn't want it to take out some other poor person's chip, so in the bin it will be going!

Does anyone know if the gigabyte Z97P supports these chips straight out of the box? I've heard bios flashes are required which is fine if I can install an OS and get as far as downloading the update. This chip is looking like a great and cheap way to upgrade my current PC.

you can download the bios to usb stick and flash through the mb's bios

dotn need to install the os,thats if the chip will let you get into the bios,im not sure but it should tell you what cpu each bios supports on gigabytes website

Pentium G3258 Intel TIM

I thought these were supposed to have improved thermal interface material?
I just delidded mine because it was getting too hot for comfort only to discover the TIM from the factory was set solid and on everything but the core.
Has anyone else experienced this with them?

The highest temperature I've seen since was 67c and that's under air (xigmatek aegir) with an 800rpm thermalright fan and 1.374v for 4.5ghz, prior to that it was hitting the 80c's.

Edit: after reading the thread it seems mines a bit of a dog re needing 1.347v for 4.5ghz!
