This morning, contactless went down in my store and a few other shops down the same road.

People who pay on their phones with Apple or Google Pay were moaning that they don’t carry their cards anymore.

Why?

Contactless can go down anytime and some shops don’t do contactless.

These people have got only themselves to blame for being stupid.

I’m being practical

I had a colleague that had an Apple Watch since day 1 and loves going everywhere just with that. What's funny is that he would blatantly change his life around where he went to accommodate it but yet still claim that it not being accepted everywhere never caused him any issues. We once went out for a meal and it ended up not working when he tried to pay. He ended up getting really annoyed by it claiming that the restaurant was awful and obviously cheap for it not working.
People will go to great lengths to deny that cards still provide a very good backup. I won't commute into the city without my wallet as I have had the tube network go funny with my phone not accepting it occasionally and requiring a card to get through. Plus if your mobile gets damaged, locks up, runs out etc etc.

If contactless went down surely that means the card readers too? Meaning cards will still be unusable. Unless they're a separate system. All the branches at work have card readers and contactless in one.

I still have cash with me in case the place doesn't accept card at all, or their system is down.

I mean it is a more secure payment method, but if I was eating out, or paying for petrol / commuting by car I would generally take my cards with me. If its just shopping then I generally have no problems at all with using the phone / smart watch, sure the systems can go down but so can PDQ's and unless you have cash, how do you pay, you simply don't and go somewhere where their checkout payment methods work.

It's just natural consolidation for some people, they carry their phone everywhere so why bother carrying a card as well?
I don't really see the difference compared to people that carry cards but no cash, they don't have a backup if their card isn't working.

Surely a shops contactless runs on the same connections that chip and pin does.

Relying on contactless limits you to £100, these days that doesn't even fill the car with diesel.

You're thinking of contactless with a card. Contactless with a phone can greatly exceed that.

Agree OP. I must encounter a non functioning contactless reader a few times a year at least. I've no idea why people have so willingly given up their 0 cost/near 0 effort backup option as the impact of just not being able to pay for stuff is significant.
