People that pay by phone and don’t have cards on them.

Relying on contactless limits you to £100, these days that doesn't even fill the car with diesel.
If you use a card, yes. If you use Google Pay, Apple Pay, etc then you're not limited to £100.

I always have my cards with me but I forget the last time I actually used one.

I always carry cash, for exactly this issue. I also have cards. I don't see apple/Google pay solves any problem I have.

It just seems the most sensible thing to do.

I just carry my phone in 90% of the times I go out. If I am taking the car, I'll probably take my wallet with me but just leave in the car.

If I know I may need cash I'll just carry a £20 note in my phone case.

whats the reg of your car.

I mean, I'm sure the car will prove a lot more difficult to be damaged to the extent that someone can steal my wallet, than myself :p

It will also make a lot more noise..

Also, I am carrying my phone so any transactions I will see immediately, that is if they don't have to be approved via the bank app.. That is on my phone.. Which I am carrying..

I had a colleague that had an Apple Watch since day 1 and loves going everywhere just with that. What's funny is that he would blatantly change his life around where he went to accommodate it but yet still claim that it not being accepted everywhere never caused him any issues. We once went out for a meal and it ended up not working when he tried to pay. He ended up getting really annoyed by it claiming that the restaurant was awful and obviously cheap for it not working.
sounds like a right plank trying to show off that he has an apple watch

real men get the chip from their card implanted under the skin at their forehead and bow to pay the bill

Im pretty much the same (carry cash and cards normally) except I went out last Friday and realised I forgot my wallet whilst in a shop, luckily I have payments enabled on my phone which I dont normally use so it was a handy to have

I feel like I'm in the minority that uses my cards still and never bothered with Google / Apple pay.

Might as well go full redundancy and bring 100 camels with you. Just in case.

I still use my physical card most of the time. Have a couple. Of cards which originally didn't work with Google wallet. They may do now. But just haven't added to it in ages.

If contactless went down surely that means the card readers too? Meaning cards will still be unusable. Unless they're a separate system. All the branches at work have card readers and contactless in one.

I still have cash with me in case the place doesn't accept card at all, or their system is down.
No, the specific issue this morning was contactless - chip and pin still worked.

Knew this was a Cheesefest thread just from the title :p

I'm one of those "stupid" people who usually use their phone to pay for things - one less thing to carry/lose, and much quicker to tap my phone than fiddle around in my wallet finding the right card, and then fiddling around to put it back away again.

If the contactless system goes down I'll just go somewhere else ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I knew who the OP was after the first few words in the thread title.

As a lot of people do in 2022, why take a card when it's very rarely needed. If the system goes down then will just mean you can't buy anything that morning - hardly the end of the world.

Would it not be the case if Contactless is down that means Visa/ Mastercard is down in general so ..card transactions wont work?

I often go out without my wallet and buy stuff on my phone as....

I forget the last time I actually used one.

^.

OP, do you carry enough cash on you at all times to purchase any goods you wish to acquire? Or if all card payments were down, you'd be stuck?
