People working from home and using MS Teams - status changes to 'Away' very quickly...

Most company computers won't allow that.

Hmm true. I write software so I need full admin access, but then I appreciate most users need their hand holding to not end up with hundreds of viruses :p.

I'm sure there's a USB dongle that simulates the same thing.

If you're worried that your manager is judging your efforts by what your Teams status indicates (and that's a LOL all of its own) why not just fake-fill your Outlook calendar with appointments for the whole day? It completely defeats the point of Teams but will give false reassurance to managers who don't know how to manage.

E: this assumes that Outlook and Teams sync at your place the same way they do at mine.

Teams is really doing my ******** head in

Well and truly sick of it now. I have gone "old school" and call people on their mobile - shock horror,.I can get up, walk round, scratch myself, make a brew,.wander outside whilst chatting rather than being chained to my surface (which is so ***** by the way) sit outside, breath of fresh air.

There appears to be an exponential rise in the use of teams to communicate - I've messaged you in teams lets have a Teams meeting. No, pick the phone up and speak to me ffs

Get the teams app :P

Interesting. I purposely set the Teams client to "appear away"; likewise when it was SfB. Enables me to vet text chat without hurting anyone's feelings. In a similar vein I've refused to accept the conditions of use and privacy for the corporate Workplace platform (18 months and counting ... ).

I've had a few Directors question my corporate ethos and spirit.

misanthropic tendencies ftw; gertcha!

I found Teams status became completely broken once I installed the app on my work phone. I can pack my laptop up and be 45 minutes into a drive to site and people still see my status as available.

With everyone working from home I do like the idea of using Teams to call someone. It's more polite, akin to calling their desk phone - in that if they're there they'll pick up. Assuming it's not urgent and they don't pickup, you can send an email or try again later. I view calls to my mobile mostly as something urgent, but it can depend on the person. If you just willy nilly call people on their mobile you might catch them in a (Teams) meeting, in the loo, having a lunchtime mooch etc.

That said, I'm the person who has a boss in the US that called me at 6.02pm on Friday when I finished 'summer hours' at lunchtime, got my voicemail because I was on my bike, and complained he on my voicemail that he couldn't get hold of me (patience of a small fly). He also called me at half midnight and I haven't figured out why (no voicemail). Go figure…

It's different jobs / roles / industries I think

I don't even have a landline / desk phone at work and generally everyone I deal with (staff and clients) historically communicate by mobile as tend to be out and about not sat at a desk all day.

I get this a lot too with our internal chat system (not teams). My London location is clearly in my profile but I frequently login in the morning to find someone from the other side of the world frantically pinging me overnight repeatedly asking if I'm there because it's urgent, then escalating to senior management when I don't respond at 2am :D
Ah, the joys of working for/with Americans.

I kind of feel the same about email. Anyone who emails me internally with a basic message they could have sent to me over Teams goes straight to the bottom of the pile, or decides to email me a screenshot when we're on a call rather than IM it me. Email for internal communication is generally awful and antiquated.

Depends on what your job is I guess - for me phone calls are really disruptive as it instantly breaks your concentration. I'd also rather people call me on Teams as VOIP is so much better quality sound wise.
