Personal plates

Nope, conventional DVLA plate @ £250.

I'm toying with the idea of getting one myself but can't decide.

Same as mine cost.

Personally, I got sick of people thinking my car was a K reg when in fact it was an R. :o

Having had one, I doubt I'd get another.

Upto you mate, tbh I wish I'd spent the £250 mine cost me on a re-map or the like which I never ultimately got round to.

Neil - sorry to hear about your mishap, as long as your ok, thats ALL that matters, remember that.

Just been reading the DVLA website.

Found a plate for £250.

But am I right in thinking if I want to sell my car I'd have to pay £110 retention fee to hold the reg plate and transfer the it to my new car, and another £110 to move the old reg plate onto my old car ready to sell it?

neil,

gutted to hear you've binned it, MSN me the pics if you have any and ill have a gander. Unless its on a wheel you might be able to not have it written off.

if you transfer your old plate on to your old car and private plate on to your new car at the same time you only pay the fee once

Wow.. unlucky Neil :(

on the private plate thing.. I was thinking of getting " HD51 JAH "

because.. my car is a 306 HDi and my name is John Andrew Hough ;)

Wife has K15 BAX (not on car at present as have to have BFG plates)
Dad has S18 BAX
Bro has P44 BAX

Its a shame that the plates cost so much in the UK. I had a private one on my VX220 Turbo before I moved to the US but out here they're next to nothing, I think I paid $75 for my plate CAYMAN5 for my Cayman S and I have AUDIR8 ready for my next purchase...

Are license plates issued on a per state basis? So for example there could be someone in Texas with the plate AudiR8 and someone else in Delaware with the same plate?

I've got one, bought it when i bought the car, prob one of the better buys i've made and i'm happy with it :)

Oh Neil what an absolute ballache mate, I'm totally gutted for you.

Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens a lot when people switch from good FWD cars to a RWD car. No, RWD is not "OMG DEATH CHARIOT" stuff, but you just can't hop in one and pedal on like you can in a FWD car. It's the reason Kate wouldn't let her brother drive the SX, he'd have got in it and gone hell for leather and destroyed it within 2 minutes.

Bad luck dude :(

Hands up I was going a bit too fast for the conditions there, nothing mental speedwise and revs wise but enough to use up that margin of error with contaminants on the surface. The roundabouts around there are notorious for buses dumping excess fuel as they fill up at Stansted opposite where I work.

I'm sure there was something on the road, but I'll chalk this one down to experience and be back in a year or two for sure!

elCheapo Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 here I come! :p

Personally, i don't see the appeal of a personalised plate, considering it performs the exact same function as a normal plate. I'd rather spend it on something more worthwhile. But worth is entirely subjective, so enjoy.

State by state basis, plus most people really don't seem to care about them over here, the only plate I couldn't get was CAYMAN S so I substituted a 5 instead.

Unlucky Neil, I liked the Teg, and like S2000s. Not having much luck with the Jap cars of late are you? :(

On the topic of plates, personal to you I think are ok, depending on how different they are, but personal to the car to me is a waste. The two BMWs above look good with their plates, as does Jez's Merc. :)

Sorry to hear about the car Neil, that's really gutting :(

When you come to sell a car with personal plates does the transfer/retention fee also cover moving the cars original plate back on?

Just realised the plate I'd probably go foe makes my current car appear younger than it is, going to have to wait until I buy a new car :)
