Personalised plates

Yep its 2 numbers, I cant quite remember how much I paid (I have had a lot to drink lol) but we got it at a bargain price as people are not buying plates at the auctions so much at the moment due the financial climate. I think it was around 5k inc fees and VAT.

if I can afford it I want to bid on GP 86 for my wife at the next auction as she is going to be a GP.

that's a bargain there, you know reg transfers do a valuation service free of charge?

i used it for a couple of my dateless plates, i know i got 1 of them at a bargain because they valued it at 36% more than what i paid for it a few months before. if you do use it they will hound you to try and sell it through them, but i simply ignored the emails and kept the letters in a file and dated them for future reference if i ever do decide to sell, probably wont though.

So personalised plates are childish?

Odd then that they are found mostly on the sort of metal most of us wont afford until we are nearing retirement..

I never said they were childish, just materialistic.

Case of keeping up with the Jones.

For some people, sure. For others it finishes off an already nice car. It's the finishing touch - a nice, simple plate with as few characters as possible.

I found any plate with 'poo' in it can be had for really good money....even low digit count plates

They are a real bargain

I don't see the point personally, I don't think a car with a private plate looks any better than one without. To my eye, it's a big plastic yellow and black square, it's never going to look good so blending in with the rest is the best thing.

Each to their own though, nobody but you can decide if it's worth your money

I have a plate:

LNN VRS on my Octy vRS.
It was cheap and cheerful.
And it totally hides the age of my car.
Mine is a Jan 2007 but because of the style of the vehicle it could be from much later.

If I stick to my plan of getting a new vRS next year then I'll move the plate over.
If not I'll either stick it on retention or just sell it - see how much I can claw back.

Personally I like it, but I was never going to spend thousands on one.

Only one "personalised" plate that would work for me in Jersey with our numerical system, and I cannot locate the owner to make an offer :(

J 52000

Do want.

Going to be a long time before the 3 digit(currently) auctioned JSY plates get to JSY 52000.

I must have the strangest reason for buying one.

I was due to drive to Luxembourg and got a super, mega cheap ferry deal which saved me about £200. The problem was that I had to give them my reg plate and this was none changeable otherwise I'd have to pay the full price. At the time I was just about to sell the Boxster but didn't yet have the Mini so I decided to buy a plate ready to put on the Mini which then meant I could give the ferry company the new plate details. It cost me about £250 so in effect I ended up paying the same as full price for the ferry but got myself a private plate out of it.

If you can get a plate thats quite close to what you want. Its when you see personal plates that just seem to be on a car for the sake of it. Although it probably means something to the driver, its not that obvious to anyone else. I realise mine might be the same, but tbh, I don't car what anyone else thinks :p

My surname is Yarde, and my plate is Y6 RDE, I got it for my 18th in July from my parents. £399. I was absolutely buzzing! :p It's pretty much as close as I can get to my name. My parents have got Y8 RDE as well :p So, we've got a nice little fleet going on :p

And here be the beast itself...

Like everything in life, it's only worth what some is willing to pay for it, not what a company “values” it at. A number plate is an absolute example of this; they have no intrinsic value what so ever and can’t be used for anything other than on a UK car, the market is very much closed. The other extreme of this would be something like gold, it can be used for so many different things the world over. Try selling it for what they "valued” it at and I’m sure it would take you sometime, maybe even forever, unless of course you get lucky.

J395 JEM could become the most valuable plate ever sold if two people want it enough, that’s the nature of these sorts of industries. If you want to make money out of plates you have to look a trends and how they will change demand. The LOL, WTF, EVO, SL55, ML55… plates are a good example of this. You can also look for changes in popular names.
