petrol prices

Oil price up over 100% in last year

May 7th 2007 - oil closed at $61.47
May 7th 2008 - oil closed at $123.53

That's an increase of almost 101%.

In sterling, the price a year ago was £30.86, on Wednesday it was £62.63, a rise of almost 103%.

Expect to see rising petrol and diesel prices continue indefinitely...

Well the increase in fuel prices has caused me to A) switch from regular to v-power, B) turn off the fuel economy setting on the trip computer and C) start enjoying my car without worrying about it.

I can think of better things to spend my money on but if it becomes a financial strain then I'll swap my car to something that does 40+ mpg. With a commute of just 25 miles a week (but with 150+ business miles per week that is paid for) though its far from that point yet.

Going back to how rubbish fuel economy is on my Golf. I managed this on the way back from Manchester to Oxford on premium fuel. Plenty of stop/Start on the M60, so it was at 41mpg!

It's still rubbish day to day though.

Rubbish photo (the iphone camera is so slow to react it's hard to take decent photos while driving :p), but

Averaged over about 50 miles. I wasn't even paying attention to the MPG thingy, took the photo because it ticked over to 146 :D

It's the phone's fault, as I just edited my post to say the camera on the iPhone is so slow to react it takes rubbish photos when driving ;)

Fox I KNEW you'd post that :(

You are quite clearly scaremongering and imagining it. We have a strong import only economy that is immune to global recession that benefits from low inflation. ;)

Yours is more impressive, I've not been able to repeat that since I got rid of the awful gripness plastic fuel economy tyres.

I can't remember for sure but I think I'd finished my last appointment early and was just sat with the cruise set at 70 relaxing a bit to waste some time.

I also attached 10 of those fuel saver magnets to my fuel line (they really work!).

Pure Motorway. I reset mine as I joined the M5 and that photo was taken just outside of York on the A1M. Traffic was heavy but not stationary around the M42 but other than that, it was a straightforward Motorway cruise at 70mph GPS.

It's actually a really efficient engine when cruising and up to temperature. It's just inefficient when cold (Which is why my current average is so crap) or when fitted with larger wheel/tyre combos.

I generally dont often top 36-37mpg now. Eagle F1's knocked it down by about 5-10% and then moving to 18's had the same effect again.

Still excellent. If I reset my Alfa on the motorway I probably struggle to get that at 70. I have had it up to 44mpg at 60mph but 37mpg is brilliant for a 3 litre.

Surely the BMW must have the most fuel efficient engine of the 3 litre classes?
