Petrol tanker drivers to go on strike

People having to make their own way to work is not draconian. On the other hand people being about to say "sorry can't get to work today unless I like, cycle or get a taxi/bus at my expense so im not coming in, pay me anyway" is bordering on ridiculous.

Being responsible for making your own way to work is part of any normal job, saying you didn't have the petrol is no better than saying your late because you forgot to set your alarm.

My point is that any normal employer shows flexibility to employees that it values - as long as the work is done.

It's a stupid crisis of our own making at the moment. There is no strike at the moment and wont be for at least another 7 days. Filling up your tank now wont help in the slightest unless you use very little a week.

It is so mindless it isn't even funny.

Mindless and selfish. Agreed.

...it's 35 miles.
This is the root of the problem. People living far from their places of work. There are many reasons for this: the increase in duel income households making it likely at least one earner has a long commute, planning legislation tending to separate and concentrate residential and commercial buildings, increased mobility in that people change jobs more often than they move house and importantly, the final reason is that transport is cheap! If it wasn't cheap it would never have been viable to live 35 miles from work in the first place. Cheap transport has exacerbated the problem.

Where is transport cheap?

DO you mean cars? Er?

It's cheaper in both terms of fuel and MY TIME (definitely my time) to drive to work than it is to either get a train (which adds another 60-90 mins onto my commute) or a bus (of which there are none) to work.

Buying, insuring, taxing, fuelling, maintaining a car is anything but cheap. It's more convenient. And probably with all the listed additional costs other than fuel, maybe public(?) transport would be cheaper... however my time is valuable to me.... so transport is anything but cheap.

Sorry if this post comes across as aggressive; it's really not meant to. I'm just in a rush.

Just ignore him - he told me the other day that he 'takes issue' with people considering motoring a 'hobby'.

Don't forget the fact he is an F1 fan.

I wonder how far he lives from work too

Personally I'm apalled he chose the vRS version of the Fabia he drives and not the slightly more economical 90bhp model. It's just shameful waste.

I agree with most of what you have said but it's a trade off.

A house near to work would be almost double what one costs 35 miles away so even if car costs were more (fully paid car from war so not that bothered) it woul;d still make sense to live where I do.

I am not going to live near work with double the mortgage just in case of fuel strikes.........

I went to local supermarket, did my shopping, got my fuel almost immediately. Job done :p

The fiesta has a 9.6 gallon tank so even worse and on par with my 2litre fiesta. He's probably cruising at 80mph :)

My point exactly. If someone cannot get around 450 miles out of 40 litres of fuel for a 1.25 litre car on the m-way then something is wrong with the car OR the manner in which it is driven.

I say Motorway as this is what the poster said:

Wish mine had a bigger tank, for a 1.25, it gets through 40 litres of fuel quick on the motorway :(

Edit: to give you an idea, my car was brimmed last week and I just filled it again tonight. It took 15.95 litres and did 176 miles according to trip. If you have 40 litres then:

40/15.95 = 2.51
176*2.51 = 441.76 miles.

Bearing in mind this is split 70/30 motorway/town so would be higher.

Drove to work this morning - went to Shell on the way as I needed fuel. Same price as when I filled up last week, empty forecourt, job done.

Drove 2 miles down the road past Sainsburys... at least 25 cars in the queue, blocking up the car park. This was at 7.00am. Hilarious really :D

Which Shell, the one in Shirley?

Just drove past my local Tesco what seems to be only place with pumps open.

About 50+ cars were queuing.

Im not fussed about brimming my tank incase someone comes and buys my car :D

That's almost the same or slightly better mpg than I get out of a 1.7 cdti astra on 90% extra urban driving so you must be some sort of hypermiling god to achieve that in a 1.25. I had a 1.25 Fiesta on a 30 mile ish round trip commute back in 2008 and I was lucky if I got 280 miles out of a tank

The local shell down here is completely out of petrol, but still has diesel

My mam is a typical example of those filling up from half a tank "Just in case". In case of what you moron!?

I sold my car today. The guy who bought it got a train down from newcastle (185 miles away).

Me, being the kind soul that I am, went and filled up for him at about 1pm so he didnt have to drive round the (unknown to him) city looking for fuel!

Ended up going to 4 different stations before finding one open. And then, of the 4 diesel pumps, only 2 were in use with a queue of about 10 cars for each one. They didnt look best pleased when I drove straight past the lot of them to the empty petrol pump and stuck £50 in and paid within a few minutes. And I thought diesels got good EMPEEGEEZ? :D

Wont have to worry about fuel strikes until I find a replacement now, but that may be sooner rather than later. :/

It is pathetic how people are rushing to fill up with fuel, often it seems people that use their cars twice A YEAR too based on what was filling up today. Old people in shiny old cars with mud flaps and hats on the back shelf

Hopefully the union and employer will reach a compromise and then the morons in government look like right ****s as no strike even happens

"Fuel Tanker Driver.Up & down M1.£45K pa.Army Fuel Tanker Driver Helmand £17K pa. Which one is striking over "safety" again?"

BUT BUT BUT!! HOW DARE YOU POINT OUT THE FLAWS IN THE ARGUMENT!!!!!11oneoneone

I guess the Army driver does get a sun tan at the same time, that must be worth the near to 30k salary difference.

Maybe some tanning lamps in the lorries would calm them down?
