Petty argument

have experienced this before. Its like the meal you evenly split the costs and end up paying twice what you ate cos someone had 4 bottles of wine to your 1.

Just pay and deal with it... People get incredibly petty with petrol and cars its one of those things that people will defend to their own deaths. Especially younger drivers.

Courtesy.

I have put fuel money in a pot before, I don't mind doing so going to be cheaper than take a train/bus or whatever.

If its not fuel money at least buy them dinner or something.

To be honest, I wouldn't want friends who quibbled over petrol costs (as in, making me pay for a random one off short trip).

I wouldn't offer to pay for a lift half an hour away for a group trip, I'd thank the driver & that's all that should be required.

I'd most likely buy them a drink or a token thank you 'gift' & I'm often very generous on nights out by getting rounds in for everybody - but I don't like the idea of anything being compulsory.

We do each other favours all the time - lifts, fixing PC's, helping them move etc - but we don't keep tallies & we most certainly don't ask each other for money (the very idea is pretty crass for my taste).

I usually drive on a night out from Bourne in Lincs to Peterborough which is roughly 30 miles. In return I get my car parking paid and a drink of coke from each passenger. I never ask for money or drinks, but they feel its common courtesy as I am not drinking.

The text I received was. 'I'll pick you up tomorrow, £5 from you and Chris.' Think it was probably the text that aggravated me the most. Just seemed rude and presumptuous that I wouldn't even offer.
To be fair, I'd be pretty peeved at receiving that message as well. Totally agree its rude and presumptuous that you wouldn't offer. Take the bike!

FWIW, I don't think I've ever asked for petrol money. Offered, sure. Either in cash or beer.

is your mate parking the car anywhere? with a bike you dont pay for parking 95% of the time so you may not understand how stupid the costs are these days for parking.

30 miles for £10 is a bit of a ****take maybe £5 total but thats a bit OTT

i understand your mates request though as i was once asked to go take some food for a mate a uni (60 mile round trip that i hadnt had planned) and his mum would give me petrol money... i agreed to do the offer and arranged the night out at which point his mum gave me 50p :(... i wasnt best pleased but it was a good night out.

Asking for money when you're not even going out of your way to give them a lift is being a pretty ****** friend in my opinion. It's like charging someone to use the toilet because you have to clean it and pay the water bill. I'd only start charging a friend if they started taking the **** and asked me for lifts every other day.

Haha ninja! I want you as a mate though. :(

I changed my mind :) As I then read £10 for 30 miles.

Although if he has a petrol guzzler of a car it's understandable.

All depends on the circumstances, Do you go out often? Do you drive and take him places? Is he giving you no choice and asking for £5 on a text message because you are a consistent leecher. These are things you have to consider.

Having an argument with my mate at the moment. We're all going on a trip out tomorrow and people with cars are charging money for the mates that are going with them.

My argument is why are they charging money? They're not going out of their way to take people, they wanted to come on the trip too and it so happens that they have cars. Has me entering the car suddenly made the trip more expensive?

Its just what mates do. 5 mates go on a trip by car? The petrol cost gets split 5 ways = cheap trip for everyone in the car.

Otherwise one chap pays for the entire cost and you get a free ride, is that really fair?

Perhaps I'm just too generous (ironic I know ;)) as I would be willing to take my mates somewhere I was going for no charge if I had a car. Hypothetical I know but still. Not much more to discuss really haha, I look like a ***** but can assure you I'm not. More the principal I was disputing.
