Petty argument

Sounds like your friend is going to make a profit for the pleasure. That's really crass to ask for money too.
Yup, just trying to work it out, unless he drives something that gives something like 15mpg (and in which case he shouldn't really be worried about £5), he's taking the **** asking for £5.

I worked it out before. Corsa, ~45mpg, gallon costs 6 quid, 30 miles. =£4 there and back.

Perhaps I'm just too generous (ironic I know ;)) as I would be willing to take my mates somewhere I was going for no charge if I had a car. Hypothetical I know but still. Not much more to discuss really haha, I look like a ***** but can assure you I'm not. More the principal I was disputing.

You wouldn't be going if it was you on your own though - so the trip only exists because you are going as a group.

Asking for money when you're not even going out of your way to give them a lift is being a pretty ****** friend in my opinion. It's like charging someone to use the toilet because you have to clean it and pay the water bill. I'd only start charging a friend if they started taking the **** and asked me for lifts every other day.

I disagree, we regularly go on trips with friends which require 8-9 hours driving, I've never asked for money but some of the other drivers do as there's usually at least 2 cars going.

There's one friend in particular who refuses to contribute anything to fuel and food/drink whilst away, yet they're happy to eat/drink what "they brought" as well as help themselves to the communal stuff and since they don't drive or have a car they'll never be the ones driving.

It's simply manners to offer to contribute, the driver may not accept but it's NICE to be asked if you want anything for taking them. After all the driver doesn't get a break and generally doesn't at any point in a trip get to chill out entirely (and have a drink).

I guess some people don't think they need to be polite to mates?

A good point that I hadn't considered I suppose. For the sake of a fiver I'm willing to let it slide to have a good day with my mates. Cheaper than any taxi/train alternative etc. I'm sure I'll haggle hell out of him tomorrow anyway.

I don't expect people to pay for petrol if I'm giving them a lift.

I don't expect people to pay if I've invited them out to dinner either.

8-9 hours then of course take their money and bring up the conversation of paying the driver, but when it's a 30 mile trip that he's also going on and asking before even going (meaning he doesn't even give them a chance to offer which I'd assume the OP would) I think is taking the **** and I'd never ask for money in that situation. I'd always offer to pay petrol money, but for the OPs situation I think it's taking the mick to ask for it when they're supposed to be your mates.

I'd also re-evaluate your friendship with that 'friend' of yours :p.

If I was in your mates position I wouldn't necessarily ask you for it, but I would somewhat expect an offer of petrol money and would think twice of offering a second lift if no offer was made

He's probably fed up giving losers like you lifts all the time! Get over it and pay the poor sod.

Fed up despite only recently having got his car and hasn't once given me a lift yet. Yeah great assumption there!

I'm taking a car full of mates tomorrow on day out drinking.
I haven't asked and don't expect any money because I know they wouldn't either.
BUT, usually they pay for my drinks and after a skin full they become very generous and force petrol money on me! Last time I came away with a profit.

The whole petrol money thing has always struck me as a little odd. Sure if I asked a mate if they can give me a lift somewhere then I would offer money but if we are going to the same place at the same time I probably wouldn't.

When a mate of mine got a job in the same town as me I offered to give him a lift into work each day (which I did for 2 years) as he didn't drive. He offered me money for petrol but I explained to him that I'm travelling that way regardless of if I take him or not. There was no extra cost to me taking him so why should I charge or take money off of him. The only reason I could see why anyone would do that is to make a quick couple of quid each day mate. It just seems like a horribly petty thing to do to one of your friends.

Fortunately I have friends that don't quibble over a couple of quid so we avoid these situations.
