Well deserved tbh. He's a great example to all footballers, I wish there were more like him. Keeps out of the news and remained professional throughout. Granted the award shouldn't be for a lifetime achievement award, but since there isn't it, it's nice that other footballers have recognised his contribution to football.

Just a shame he's never had a chance to play in an international tournament.

That is a bit of a joke that giggs won it. They should have just dreamt up a random lifetime award for him. Vidic or Ronaldo would both of been deserving winners.

Lampard has had a much better year than Gerrard IMO.

For some reason lampard gets overlooked

IMO Lamps has had his best ever season, although he hasn't scored as many as previous seasons, his consistence has been superb.

He has also performed well in big games such as against arsenal in the FA cup semi final with that 40 yard pass and his champions league goals vs liverpool.

There's no denying Gerrard has had a good season but great? No. His form has been has been on and off.

I think its a complete disgrace that Lampard hasn't even been nominated. Note the way he's never in the paper for any accusations of abuse/drink driving etc

An absolutely brilliant professional at the peak of his career

Oh, he got the assist against West Ham btw ;)

At least Gerrard didn't win it, after seeing him on the tv analyzing the Liverpool- Arsenal game.....what a joke. Although it wouldn't have surprised me with the amount of bumchums he has.

I think Young only won the award because he got the Player of the Month twice in 1 season, which is a very big achievement, even if he hasn't played up to par the last 2 months or so. Still think he has the best cross in the league though!

If Man City were more consistent and a better position in the league, then yeh Ireland would have most likely taken it.

As for player of the year: Gerrard should have won it, if not Lampard. Ronaldo's season has been pretty poor. Giggs should get a lifetime achievement though.

I think the problem that the likes of Lampard/Gerrard/Ronaldo have, is that they have scored more goals in previous seasons, got more assists, so this season it could be percieved like they've not done as well. Giggs didn't set the world alight last season (not that he really has this season in my opinion) but with the press, Ferguson pushing the bandwagon, people could get caught up into thinking he's performed better then he has.

Rose tinted specs are a great thing sometimes

Lampard has never won it and has since 2004 scored per season

Considering we won the league two of those years he's got to be doing something right.....

But in each of those years you had Henry who scored 30, 25 and 27 Premiership goals for 2004, 05, 06, Drogba who scored 20 in 08 and Ronaldo who scored 31 last season.

I know goals aren't the be all and end all, but i'm just going on the goal stats i could find to match against yours.

I know the people i mentioned didn't win the PFA award, but Terry did in 04-05, so at least Lamps lost out to a Chelsea player

Hate to say it, but I completely disagree with it going to Giggs. I cant help but think that the only reason he got the votes was because it was the last "realistic" opportunity to give him the award.

In all seriousness, based on performances and number of appearances over the course of the year, I dont see how it can go to Giggs.

Dont get me wrong, Giggs most definately deserves some award , especially in recognition of his loyalty to one team and his performances throughout his career, but it should have been some kind of lifetime career award or something. Not player of the year.

I'm a Liverpool fan, but frankly the player of the year should have gone to Vidic in my opinion. The award should go to someone based on their performances and statistics for the season, not to someone based on emotional reasons. For me, given the number of appearances and their performances over the number of minutes on the pitch, that should be Vidic, not Giggs.

Giggs wasn't even Man. U's best player from Jan to Jan, really weird choice assuming the voters actually understood what they were voting for.
Having met plenty of footballers I doubt they did.

It's just more evidence that it's based on the season and not the year. Giggs was so bad from jan-may that UTD fans were praying that he wouldn't play in the CL final and that he would retire at the end of the season.

From Skysports website:

"That has all changed now, though, with the 35-year-old recognised by his peers as being the Premier League's top performer during the 2008/09 campaign."

Not that he has been the best player this season, but he had a better season than year.

As I said when the nominations came out, he hasn't even had as good as year or as much football as cahill let alone be the best player from the top 4 or even manu.

I'm sure supporters of just about every prem club can find a player thats had a better year in their side than giggs, well aside from newcastle ;)

My thoughts exactly.

Seems this may very well be a tribute to a great player as his last possible chance to get it.

It's an award his career has deserved, and arguably could have won it in the past. This year however, whether it's the season or year to year his performances haven't warranted the award.

I'm happy he's got it, but do think there were better choices.

giggs , ronaldo and anelka should not be in there , this is a joke ,

lampard should be in there , and for the keeper i would put almunia there , he has done well this season

lol, Ronaldo might be the best player in the league. Frankly theres been a handful of performance from the best 10 players that matched Ronaldo or Rooney on Saturday. Ronaldo not scoring 41 goals doesn't mean he's crap. He's been pretty fantastic, what is it, he scored a brace not long ago, a brace this weekend. He's probably scored 5/6 goals and gotten 3-4 assists this month alone.

Anelka also wasn't on the list afaik?

While Almunia has been good and consistant, and all keepers have their funny bad games, and i mean ALL keepers. Shay given is the best keeper in the league, theres simply no question. There are simply countless games every single year where Given saves points with series of fantastic saves, games with 20 great saves in. He's kept both Newcastle and City in games they utterly didn't deserve anything from and he does it consistantly. Frankly no one even comes close to how good he is. The Fulham keeper whose name I can't spell off the top of my head, has been truly excellent this year aswell, but frankly Fulham have had a very very good defence. likewise VDS might have had good results but mostly about the defence not save after save from him, he's had more poor games than a lot of other keepers. The difference is Given has been infront of two hilariously bad defenses all year and still delivered the goods.

Almunia has been Arsenal's best player (him, or Gallas) this season, but no where near the best player in the league
